Hmmm, wow MK, couldn't you find a blurrier pic to post?
It looks like the first word under the dark oval is "Royal" but I can't make out any of the rest. Any of you vintage hat types know of any hat companys with royal in the name?

My best guess

It looks like Royal Stetson to me, using my trick photo shop tools...but it is a very poor quality ...

I SUSPECT it is taken from a movie, where the main character is beaten by thugs and his hat falls off, revealing the inner logo.

Am I unworthy?

You are correct sir!

It is from The Big Sleep. Bogart gets ruffed up and falls. Lucky for us his lid comes off to reveal the liner.

I was hoping you vintage buffs could identify it.

I AM Worthy!!! YEA!!

I freeze framed the scene many times when Bogart is beaten in the alley by the two thugs, after he looks in the sedan parked on the curb and sees the registration "Harry Jones" for his Plymouth Coupe. You can see how the actors pulled their punches when you step-by-step the quality on the DVD. However...I thought the logo from looking at the hat on the TV screen was a Borsalino..your photo shows it to be a Royal Stetson.

I also looked carefully freeze frame when as Sam Spade he visits Caster Gutman''s atparment, and the underside of the hat is visible when Bogie tirades out to the hallway saying "you have until five o'clock, then you are in or out..for KEEPS" Can't tell there either. I believe that Bogart would have been dressed in the best hat available at the time...Borsalino.

interesting...the very first time I ever saw The Big Sleep on DVD, I stopped that scene to investigate the hat Bogie's wearing when he gets roughed up, and I knew it was a Royal Stetson right away...but I've never seen that particular logo for it on a real hat (this means on eBay). heavens knows I've looked. But my grandfather has said many times that Borsalino was indeed the best, back in the day.

I wish I had seen this post earlier. I would have been worthy...!

Could be a Borsalino logo.
I have seen many different logos from them... one with a crest and a sash. They were also famous for using all sorts of liners and sweatbands... sometimes you find white leather sweatbands in their 30's hats.

This could be a custom hat from either Stetson or Borsalino. If it does indeed say royal I would bet on Stetson, but I think bogey would be wearing a Borsalino.

Then again it could be another dress hat maker all together.

But ultimately I think it's a Stetson
