A Primer on Fedoras...

Well, here's proof that I'm still too new to this - Could someone tell me the differences in the various types of fedoras out there? What are the differences between a Stetson Stratoliner, Playboy, Open Road or Whippet? That sort of thing.

Stylistically, the differences are minor...

All of the lids you named are essentially snap-brim fedoras with high crowns, with most of the popular (and desireable) models made between the mid-30s and 1960. The differences are mainly ribbon and brim treatment. Brims are usually between 2 3/8" and 2 3/4" with some of the ORs running 3". The Strats and ORs have thin 3/8" ribbons, the Playboys' ribbons are usually 3/4" with the Whippets running 1 1/2" or wider.

Each of the hat models comes in several grades, running from 3X to Royal to Royal Deluxe and higher designations like "25" or even "100" in the case of the ORs.
