a little harmless venting

sorry, but I needed somewhere to vent a little.

Someone just asked for a return on a hat I sold on ebay because, "Both the side and the back of the brim are now upturned in a way that is not symmetrical, and I don't want to pay for steaming and blocking the hat."

You know how sometimes, especially on straw hats, when they are put in a box, the brim can go up slightly on a side, but it is fixed by either just pressing on it or steaming it? You don't have to pay to do this! You don't have to block it!

Well, I emailed this guy telling him how easy it was to remedy, how to do it, and that I would consider a return if he either sent me a picture of the condition, or if he tried what I suggested and it didn't work.

Without contacting me, he slapped me with neutral feedback. (my first non-positive feedback on my ebay account).:rage: :rage: I suppose it could have been worse.

I'm a little pissed, especially since it was over something so incredibly minor, and that I stupidly left my feedback for him after he paid. (lesson learned, but It just always annoys me when sellers wait for feedback to be left to leave feedback. Kind of feels like blackmail)

I checked the feedback he's left for others after all this happed, and discovered that this is not uncommon for him to do.

sorry, It's just that this happening a day after that woman at the diner going off, and with AP exams starting tomorrow, I'm really stressed, and everything's kind of happening at the same time. Bartenders, if you want to remove this thread, please do.

Sorry about that, DM. Sometimes you get a bad apple. You should leave a response to his feedback, which I believe you can still do. And, of course, don't leave feedback until after the buyer does. It is sad that it has to be that way, but I simply don't consider the transaction finished until the buyer expresses satisfaction.

Welcome to the world of retail my friend!! I have had hats come back to me because the feather was not put into the correctly! People that wear hats can be in little picky sometimes. It all goes with the flow. I'm sure that you will not have too many customers like this but be prepared now and then for a particular customer.

Yeah, prior to this, all my other experiences were perfect. Lots of friendly hat wearing people out there.

Yes, but then you have sellers that don't give you any feedback after you have left them good feedback. I have had 3 in the last 2 months.:(

I get that treatment on ebay about 5 times a year. Most people expect soft straw hats not to be perfect. Some don't and do the neutral or negative thing. I hate to admit it, but I only return feedback now.

If we didn't have people in Ecuador who need jobs, we wouldn't even bother with ebay.

Good luck on your AP tests. I remember those days.

As to eBay - well, I've only sold one thing there, so am a neophyte, but have worked in positions where I dealt with the public every day, and there is always going to be a handful of idiots. Since it's just this one person, I would not worry at all about your feedback.

Hey, when you're a little stressed the best thing to do is get it out of your system. There's nothing more immediatly stressful than somebody giving you grief of a rediculous nature, like that feedback. That buyer is one of those who feels entitled regardless of any circumstance...

Do good on those tests.....it all works out...

Dinerman, if that straw were a 7 1/2, I'd say give him his money back and sell it to ME! Seriously, that's a sharp hat that went for a good price -- I would've gone as high as $50.

Maybe you can list it here in the Classifieds. The ingrate who currently owns it shouldn't have it.

God- I seem to be a nut magnet as of late.
I just got this from someone.
any special reason why you ran up the price of a hat you dodnt need? think i may contact ebay !
The auction was for a very nice looking dobbs, listed as a 7-1/8 in the auction listing, as as Dobbs tend to run large, I thought I'd bid. I was outbid, and decided that, instead of entering a higher bid, I'd save my money for another auction I was watching. The dobbs ( a beautiful wide brim in whippetesque dimensions with that red/brown band thing going on) ended up selling for $16.50, an absolute steal. My bid was only 7 bucks over what he bid, so it's not even that much money.

Also, as I understand it, ebay works when you get people bidding against each other. If I sent an email to every person who outbid or bid aginst me, probably every single one of you, and another couple hundred people would have something in their in-box.

:rage:

How to handle it: Like dihydrogen monoxide off an anatid's dorsal surface. Just let it roll off...

What, do they think because they've outbid you, you're obligated to raise your bid?*snort* If so, what they've accused you of is what they woulda done, in psych circles we call this "projection"--assuming our own faults and patterns of behavior apply to others as well.

Perhaps this fellow needs some analysis of his own bidding patterns... Either way, just don't let it get to ya.

as many times as i've been tempted to email someone who's outbid, sniped or just blown me off the map , the feeling eventually quells.

If someone emailed me and threatned me with "contacting eBay" I would hope I'd come back with something snappy like "Nuts to you" ...well maybe soemthing better than that..

He's Just a newbie getting used to the newly emerged evilBay side of himself....not to worry.....

That's ridiculous. And he's complaining to you when you didn't even win the auction? :eusa_doh:

And what's he going to say to ebay? "This guy who I think has too many hats already bid more than me on one I wanted so I could have too many hats, too!"

I'm sure the seller wasn't upset that you bid.

You can please everyone!

Ummm... that should have been "can't" not can!

I'm amazed that someone that's bought a few straw hats (as shown in his feedback) would make an issue over something that insignificant. I pretty much expect my vintage straw hats to have a bit of character. I'd understand it if you stuffed it into a box half the size of the hat (as I've had one or two felts arrive in) but that takes the cake.

As for the other, well, it's pretty darned funny! lol Apparently someone just doesn't get the concept of eBay. Did he expect the two of you would keep outbidding each other, fingers flying on the keyboards and mice, until the end of the auction? I've been unhappy when someone has bid on something that raised the price higher than what it looked like I'd pay, but if I won it anyway then it means I was willing to go that high in the first place. Hey, here's an idea... let's all watch out for this guy to bid on something again, and bid in small increments to raise the price! On second thought, nah... we've all got much better things to do!

Cheers,
Tom

Did you ship the hat in a box with a cut-out section to hold the hat centered (so the brim wouldn't be pushed against one side of the box)? I don't mean to sound critical, but sometimes a little extra care in packing a relatively fragile hat can result in better buyer satisfaction. Remember, shippers may not know/care what is actually in the box.

Ack!

I feel your pain Dinerman,

I also, have those A.P. Tests, but without the added annoyance of dealing with those lovely ninnies who get hold of a computer. I am truly sorry about your rotten OFAS experience, what can be said? It does seem that the problem came from a bad case of E.B.K.A.C.

(Error Between Keyboard And Chair) lol
