How often have you been shopping eBay for a hat and found a seller who knows virtually nothing about hat sizes? We all know the size given on the tag informs us very little, because a vintage hat may have shrunk several sizes. Trying to instruct a seller to use the belt method (viz.: Determining the actual measurement around the inside of the sweatband by unwinding a belt snugly inside the hat, marking the belt, then measuring it with a yardstick) is like teaching a dog to walk on its hind legs. However, many sellers can measure the inside diameters of a hat (long way and short way), and indeed they sometimes offer this information without being asked. Provided they do this carefully, without distorting the hat in the process, one can use these data to derive the inside circumference of a hat by using this handy online tool: Ellipse Circumference Calculator

Perhaps some of my Fedora Lounge colleagues will find this helpful.
