a 4 Button Suit

I have a 4 button suit that I bought about 5 years ago. Its black with a light windowpaine pattern.

Is there any historic connection to the 4 button? Or should I retire it because it looks dated but not in a good way?

Thanks!

It really depends. If it were styled like a Victorian era or early 20th century four button coat, maybe it could look good with the appropriate style shirt, tie, trousers, etc. to go with it. My guess is that you bought one that's just like a business suit, though.

I'm not a big fan of the modern ones for sure. They always look really stuffy and just "not right" for some reason.

Here are two examples of older style coats that look better to me. Note the larger cutaway and the softer, rounded lapels. This is in direct contrast to a modern hard lapel roll and very little cutaway at the bottom, which doesn't help the strict look of the high fastening four buttons. Is this making any sense?

Fredchook will disagree

Yeah, four-buttoners never seem to look quite right.

I recall once seeing a man walking towards me and immediately noticing something off about his jacket. Something vague and terrible.

Until he got closer.

Oh, four buttons.

I would like to see a picture of you in the suit.
Nothing wrong with a 4 button imho. Add a bowler or homburg, walking stick and you are good to go. ;)
