I rented this film from the library this weekend, and it was a good movie. It takes place from the mid 40's through the 70's. The plot surrounds a NY writer and avid reader who begins a letter exchange with a British bookseller. If you enjoy books, and enjoy films with a strong literary mindedness, then you should enjoy this. It stars Anthony Hopkins whose work I really enjoy.

It was also a wonderful play before the film was made. Since it's a true story, I had to go see the place when I was in London some years ago. Imagine my shock when 84 Charing Cross Road is, or was then, a Pizza Hut.

I've never seen the play but picked up the movie on a lark and enjoyed it very much.
Maybe I can get a writing relationship with the Pizza Hut manager. ;)

Sincerely,
The Wolf

You might want to borrow the DVD of Peeping Tom and watch the bonus material besides. The author Leo Marks' dad ran that bookshop and young Leo spent many an hour immersed in books. Leo was a cryptographer of particular elegance, which may be of interest to Loungers.
My dad loved that book 84 Charing Cross Road and recommended it to just about everyone he met. I brought home the video which he enjoyed; I've yet to see it.
Thanks for the reminder, poetman.

1987 was a fantastic year for me,
my favorite year yet!
A great year for music, FILMS, my long awaited independence,
and both, my hair and waistlines!

I saw this film just a few years ago, and I was sorry that
I hadn't seen it when it debuted.
Strangely; it brought back memories of the time of
actual filming, more than transport me to the
nostalgic era of the story[huh]

I've always loved Ann Bancroft, and she doesn't disappoint
in this, and subsequently; I loved Ms.Hanff.

Among my Favorite scenes;
Is when Ms.Hanff, and her friend are eating Chinese take out
by the open window in her apartment.
My Mother and I used to do this all the time
when I was growing up (And I have to throw this in)
Remember how good Cantonese take out was, back
say 25,30 years ago? What happened?

I digress.

Although the book titles metioned were way over my head,
it didn't keep me from being fully drawn to the characters,
And the film is a lesson on the proper etiquette of
letter writing and correspondence.
One day there will be a thread on the FL, about the
lost art of such... if there isn't already.

CHEERS!

PS
Hey Bugsy,
Pizza hut huh?
That's explains why we walked right past
never seeing it.
