80 Years Old Abandoned Army Barracks

The Taivallahti Barracks were build at downtown Helsinki between years 1935 and 1938. When finished, the barracks housed the Motor Transport Company of the Finnish Defence Forces until their displacement in 2002. The buildings are protected by law and are to be transformed into a housing area during next few years.

What I really love is the now politically incorrect map of the world (as it existed before the WWII) in the back of the former diner!

Looks like a fascinating site. Good to hear they're going to convert this into housing, too. Regularly troubles me to see how many old buildings lie empty here in the UK while there are people sleeping on the streets. I've always thought old army barracks would be excellent sites for conversion into residential accomodation. I always love the design of them, too.

Fully agree. Army barracks are great for housing and their facilities like libraries, school rooms, mess halls, swimming pools etc. are ideal for communal activities. Drill places into gardens.
Just keep away the graffiti vandals... ^^

Here in the States there's a lot of former military installations built in the 1940s-1960s buildup that back in the 1980s etc still had several similar buildings just standing empty. I used to wander through such as able and marvel at the quality of the wood they used in everyday use like baseboards etc. Woodworkers today would drool at being able to get ahold of that stuff, long truly width and length (e.g., 2" x 4" not 1 3/4" by 3 1/2") and fairly knot-free, etc.
