Y'know guys, as a permanent greencarded 'legal resident' of the U.S.A., the Fourth of July is (OK maybe with the exception of Christmas and my memories of it as a child in U.K.) absolutely my favourite 'Holiday'. Down here in South Central TX the flags are flying proud at most rural and the majority of urban residences, including mine. I don't remember seeing many Union Flags in the U.K. or St. George's flags flying in England at anything but official offices when I was resident there. I'd like to think that that has changed.........

Personally, I don't feel proud to be an American.

I feel fortunate.

Fortunate that my people, generations ago, owing to acts of god and man (famine and genocide) undertook the struggle to travel across the world to find a new life in this land. And once here, worked hard, became successful and provided for their progeny.

I'm proud of those people..


That said, I do love America....to a fault.

I've read a lot about 4th of July picnics, where everyone in town will bring their specialties and sit out watching fireworks, enjoying the community. It may be a fantasy, but I hope that still exists for some of you! Independence is a great thing to celebrate - I hope you are all having a wonderful day!

I went through the local park on my run at about 7.00 this morning and several families were already setting up the tents and grills for pretty big scale picnics.

We'll be at the city fireworks later tonight.
