I'm looking at a shirt that is made up of 65% cotton and 35% Hemp.. I was wondering what texture this shirt will have as I have no experience with this blend. Can anyone give me a descriptive explanation - for some reason when I hear the Word hemp I imagine a vintage potato sack or burlap... among other things :D Thanks.

I have a hemp shirt from REI (55% hemp, 45% cotton), and though the fabric is a loose weave, it's one of the softest, most breathable shirts I have. Looks nice, too.

My limited experience with a hemp/cotton blend is that the shirts are relatively durable and breathable, soft and decent quality; differing little from current 100% cotton counterparts.

I think much (not ALL) of the hemp clothing and accessories in the current market are purposely made rough to imply a more "natural" feel so teenage "hippies" believe they're fitting into a particular subculture. Of course there are also the obvious marijuana implications which are unfortunate hogwash and necessarily irrelevant, but provide a GREAT marketing tool for most hemp sales. (Please don't read this as a slam to anyones' previous posts on this thread. I'm referring to Marketing Departments at clothing manufacturers and retail stores!)

The fact is, current industry can render hemp smooth and soft with little trouble. You would likely enjoy the shirt. Maybe you could handle one at a nearby store to see what you think?

If it weren't for the obvious conspiracy/political/etc. rhetoric that would likely ensue, I would comment more, but I would just as soon dip out before the censors dip in.

Depending on how the threads are woven, a cotton/hemp blend shirt should pretty much feel like a cotton/linen blend shirt. Both linen and hemp are bast fibers and have very similar properties. The hempen fabrics currently available in the US tend to use bulkier treads for a more rustic or loose-weave appearance.

Thanks for all that info and knowledge guys.. and I love that old poster. I figure that the comparison between hemp and linen is probably enough to make it worth while. Thanks again!
