I'm very sorry to start a thread for this, but I really only wish to ask a source for a few pewter buttons for this coat. Peacoat (the person) has a thread with the picture of the button, and I have tried a PM and his profile but as a new user, I am unable to contact him.

I need 4 buttons (3 and a spare) and have scoured the internet for them. The Fedora Lounge seems the only place that even acknowledges that pea coats can have anything other than Bakelite, cheap plastic, or gold buttons!

The history of the coat is that my grandfather got it in the merchant marines after he mustered out of the navy. He was a mate, but according to him, only the Captain and Chief (or other dept heads) wore gold buttons. As for the age, he says he got it new in the early 60's. The navy copied the merchant service's buttons because they were "smarter". He preferred the plastic as they were less likely to snag ladders and the railing, but refused to lose the style since they were so sharp (I agree).

I offer that only for the nostalgic types. But if anyone knows where I can get some replacements, they will have my supreme gratitude.
