1970s Tie - But From the '20s.

We all know that the 1970s aped the '20s, only in a groovily awful way. The following photos indicate that maybe the '20s were more '70ish then we thought.


This is a 1920s cardboard gift box with a 1920s satin tie in it. The tie was never worn. Made by "Liberty of London", which even today is known for its flowered print fabrics. Now tell me: do the box and the tie look trippy and far out, or what? Sure, it's not made of polyester: but neither were the most expensive '70s ties.

What's funny is, I probably wouldn't wear that tie if I knew it was from the seventies, well, because its from the '70s! But I would wear it knowing it's from the '20s. Hmmm, is that diachronic bigotry?

I do this all the time! I have a definite prejudice for '30s ties, even though many of the brocade tie designs made today are very close copies of the '30s ones. Diachronic indeed ... lol

Just to show that no era has the monopoly on bad taste: I recently passed over a '30s vintage tie with a murky pattern in dark brown, tawny brown, and purple. It looked like what you'd get if you fed grape Pez to the cat - in rayon satin.

But at least it didn't tie a knot the size of a baby's head.

You aren't kidding. That tie is ugly and I have seen ugly vintage ties that I would never wear.
A leisure suit is another issue. Ewwwwww!

Of all the vintage ties that have been posted on this site, I've honestly not seen more than a (small) handful I'd actually wear. I like the look of most of the other Golden-era garments folks show here, and I'd gladly wear a well-made vintage suit. But for some reason, the ties just all seem...well, ugly.

The history of tie-dom is mostly one of extremes. Redblueblack and skinny eventually leads to reaction and rebellion. Paint-pot colors lead to baby-head knots lead to throw-up patterns lead to...redblueblack and skinny all over again.

The thing I dislike about ties of the past 25 years is the shape. They're just straight up 'n down paddles without any drape or form. If they tapered more towards the knot part (say circa early 50s), they'd be fine. There are a wealth of colors and designs and fabrics are more luxuriant than ever.

Marc, I hate to put doubt into your mind, but are you sure that's not a 70's tie after all?

I don't know a lot about ties, except that they were newfangled things in the 1920's, which makes me wonder why there would be guys in ties on a 1920's tie box. To me that box screams 1970's all the way, well except that the gents don't have sideburns.

I do know a bit about Liberty of London, which expanded their menswear offerings in the 1970's. I visited London in the 70's and my mom is a fabric hoarder (just like me). The print could be any era really. It seems 70's to me, but a lot of Liberty stuff is hard to date.

Plus the 70's were a time when everyone aped Art Nouveau to the extremes. Liberty of London was a big deal then, with their Art Nouveau stuff. However, if I had a dollar for every Art Nouveau item that was really 70's I'd be really rich by now.

If you like the tie run with it, whatever era it is. If you don't, well you have a few takers on the FL apparantly.

Absolutely sure, Tourbillion. The cut, the fabric, the thickness, the lining, the length and even the label point directly to the earlier 1920s. Someday I'd enjoy showing the tie to you in person. You'd notice immediately that it's not from the '70s.

The tie as we know it has been around since about 1900.

Oh, yeah, looking at the skinny end, there is no doubt as to its age.

And i may be in the minority here, but i love the thing. I'm a big fan of floral motifs. This would be a regular in my tie rotation.

For the record, i wouldn't wear most of the ties posted, either. Those big old 40s things just don't float my boat. Give me understated patterns and 30s shape any day of the week.
