WONDERFUL 1950s CASHMERE OVERCOAT.
Union made in the USA.
c. 40, 42. Measurements:
Chest: 22 1/2
Sleeve: 24 1/2 (+1 1/2)
Shoulder: 19 1/4
Length: 40
Back in the 1950s cashmere was still a seriously luxurious fabric--thick, soft, and offering terrific a terrific warmth/weight ratio. It was a far cry from the thin stuff that's available widely in malls now and which has a tendency to pill.
This overcoat--likely made in the 1950s, judging by its Union label--was made from old-school cashmere..... Soft, warm, and luxurious.
Given the expense of cashmere back then items made from it tended to be very well-made indeed--after all, why use something as expensive as cashmere to make a run of the mill product? This coat is no exception.
Cut as a single-breasted overcoat this fastens with three large front buttons. It is fully canvassed and fully lined. The lining is a lovely 1950s lining with subtle geometric patterning. The sleeves feature ornamental turn-back cuffs and a single button. All of the major seams--down the sleeves and down the center back, as well as the side seams--are lapped, to ensure that the coat retains its shape. Lapped seams also surround the two deep flapped pockets on the front; these are lined with heavy cotton duck. The coat has a single center vent.
This was Union made in the USA between 1949 and 1962, so it likely dates from the 1950s.
It does have a few minor issues. First, the lining is frayed at the hem and at the shoulder--although this would be a relatively easy fix. There is some loose stitching at the top of the vent, which needs some attention--again, a minor issue and an easy fix. There is a moth nibble on the back, as shown--although this is hard to see given the coat's colour and pile. And the coat needs a dry clean and a press to freshen it up.
Conservatively, then, this coat is in Good condition, but could easily be in Very Good/Excellent condition with some minor care and attention.
As such, this lovely 1950s cashmere overcoat is a bargain at just $39, or offer, boxed, shipped, and insured in the USA!
