1940's British Horsehide Jacket

Nice generic British jacket. prob 50s looking at the cast stopper box and slider. Liner doesn't look right for Lewis, but might be a replacement. If Derek has seen it and not bought it, it probably means it's not by Lewis.;)

Probably lambskin, like the vast majority of British jackets of the era. Certainly appears to be. This one is remarkable in the lack of damage. So few British leather jackets survive because they were made of hides that were so easily damaged.

Interesting that it made its way to Japan!

Thanks, Baron. Lewis Leathers is offering the Countryman in a veg-tanned black sheepskin that's probably quite similar to what was available at the time.

I've seen the repros up against the originals in the Lewis Leathers archive/collection (which is astonishing in both the number of originals and the variety) and the repros are very well done indeed. The zippers he's had made are particularly excellent, though I wish he'd done some earlier style folded stopper boxes and pullers, rather than cast. But you can't have everything, and I guess the cast boxes are more correct for the period of jacket he's going for.
