There was another of these Macintosh suits from this seller that I snapped up last week. It arrived Tuesday. The fabric is INCREDIBLE, the quality is top-notch and the suit could be brand new. It was (and I presume this one still listed is) made by Macintosh for a customer in San Francisco in 1941. I'll have pics of the one I bought up in the show your suits thread as soon as I get it back from the tailor. But - anyone who wants to take a chance on the suit that is still listed should do so - the one I have is in astonishingly good shape.
Right size is right. It sounds like the chest measures 38 inches around, which would suggest this would fit maybe a 35 at best. perhaps she was a little loose in the measurements and it could fit a 36 maybe. This would be consistent with what we know about the size of most macintosh suits, and the waist size was well.
Patrick, what size was the suit you bought? What did she call it and what was it actually?? Was it the same wearer, do you think?
Great find on your part. They had a shop in San Francisco. Check the threat I started on Macintosh a few years back and recently added to. There is some history of a guy who was a clerk there in the late 30s and was a long time SF clothier.
It seems clear she did her homework at the best possible site for this info. Some of her language is pretty much Resortes' flowery prose.
I am a 36 Reg, and this suit fit me well, except for the the jacket skirt which was very tight around the hips. The trouser back is just extraordinary. The shoulders are really really broad, almost exact to the 1941 vintage illustrations I've found online. The trouser legs are wide at the knee but taper as they approach the ankle. I presume this suit still on sale was made for the same person, though who knows whether it was made the same year. Mine was on the same wearer as in the terrible illustrations she has up on etsy. The fabric looks less interesting, but I'd say it's worth taking the risk and picking it up. This reminds me - I will post pictures of the suit I bought in the appropriate threads tonight or tomorrow.
