So, I'm on ebay looking around and stumble onto two ebayers that have repro vintage sweatshirts. One in in,..of all places,..Japan!!!:eusa_doh: and they're REDICULOUSLY overpriced,

(Edit - no live auctions please)

...then there's this person who says she had them specially made for her "store",....the thing is, there's GOT to be someone supplying these,...at an AFFORDABLE price!!!

Any ideas?? I'd like to find someone carrying them for $30-40 bucks or less and pick up about 3-4. this way i'll have one when one wears out, which would take a long time.

Why are you so certain you're being taken to the cleaners? Japan's an expensive place my friend, catering to a tiny market of enthusiasts with a limited supply. That price sounds about right if you ask me.

Man-a-live!!...what is with the people reproducing the simplest of things but pricing them as if they're designer clothing bought from 5th Avenue!!?? This is just stupid,...$95 for a sweatshirt,.....that gets one big,...WOW :fing28:

You must be from a totally different tax bracket than I.....I dont know too many people in the real world that spend over $100 clams for a sweatshirt.

cowboy, the Japanese are known worldwide for fastidious attention to detail in their reproductions, going stitch-for-stitch. At that point, you're not paying for the item, you're paying for the detail and craftsmanship. If that sweatshirt blows your mind, you'd be amazed at what some people will pay for a pair of reproduction jeans.

...doesn't mean you should. It's just the reason why people do. You want the absolute, dead-level PERFECT reproduction, it's more than likely Japanese. In this case, it's an obscure item that I'm not really sure why many people outside of Japan would buy...almost looks like a exchange or even souvenir item that would have been purchased at Naval Station Great Lakes. Not really an issue item, from what I can tell. More of an 'Americana' thing than anything else.

But Old Navy's sweatshirts are fine for day-to-day wear, especially when it's an item that there's no specification or regulations to draw from. Your typical '30s / '40s sweatshirt was produced in all manner of patterns, colors and fabrics, just like any modern one. Just find one with a trim fit, wide rib knits, and a convincing collar(a lot of them had the triangular reinforcement at the neck).

...that reminds me, I need to pick up a few, I wore the hell out of my favorite one.

A whole other subculture

That's what you get when the only other little known market for this stuff in any other part of the world is on this message board. The reality of wal-mart pricing gets in the way of what this stuff is actually worth when made in limited quantities.

Nobody here cares about it .....unless it is shoved down their throat by some hot fashionista hollywood type whilst walking their dog wearing their favorite Kenneth Howard lives hat. He really hates (YOU,ME) everybody here by the way.

The previous poster was right some newer old navy and gap sweatshirts are blatant rip-offs of the 1940's originals and at the real sweatshop prices too.

Then the dealer here buys it for pennies on the yen sell it for $200 to $400 for originals and the Japanese reproduce it exactly because they can and still care about quality made garments.

That price is kinda normal.

I have tried to have sweatshirts made by some of the original makers here in the states knowing that they make them for the japanese market.

Unless it a 1000 shirt order (per size) they won't even bother... or let me even buy the ones they are making for the Japanese without silkscreening.

Soon though------ real soon I should have some stuff up and running that are pretty good repro's of 1940's style sweatshirts.

Japanese-made, perfect copy reproductions, from sweaters to A2 jackets, are quite expensive.

I have four excellent old-style sweatshirts (as mentioned) from Old Navy, $10.

Keep looking.

Nope..... I call anybody/everybody dude, it's part of my 1980's vernacular. Plus it's Kalifornia because my 1980's Youth Brigade punk rock album says it is..

Sink with it or succeed.

Sadly, my appreciation for Japanese repros extends only to viewing them online. How I wish my tax bracket were so well stuffed! ;) The picture you see to the left is a good indicator of my income LOL...

I do agree the prices are intense for the casual enthusiast. I'd love a Buzz Rickson A-2, but I'd be frightened of wearing it the way its meant to be worn. Still, beautiful stuff those repros.

And Scotrace if I may, do Old Navy still offer those sweatshirts? If so, I've got a little trip to make tomorrow. :)

The Old Navy sweatshirt is cool.
I have a pair of khaki pants from O.N. They are full cut down to the ankle with a decent rise.

I just cant bring myself to weat a pair of low rise khakis anymore,....been hunting for wwii khakis and wearing them much more these days,.....

Its so sad to see how other countries adore and appreciate Americana SO MUCH MORE than Americans themselves!! A total and complete shame!!!!:(

Oh and for 80's culture,..hmmm,...yeah I was (as strange as it is) raised on 50s oldies and OLDER music. When I was in second grade I was figured to be a fruit because I listened to Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, etc...though still was around 80s punk, pop, etc. We had a time in our 2nd grade class lunch where we could play 45 records,....the teacher picked me one day along with some other kids who brought records,...my Pennsylvania 6-5000 got turned off after the teacher realized I was the only one jamming to it,...LOL!!![huh] ;)
