1930s-40s Canvas Hats

So I was watching Pearl Harbor when I realized that the guy "with the navy news reel" was wearing a canvas hat. This got me interested in learning more about actual canvas hats from the period, but of course research has not been easy due to the insane amount of commercialized junk online. Were civilian canvas hats from the 1930s-40s any different from those being offered for sale today? Also, any recommendations on where to get one like, or at least close to, the one shown in the movie with the larger brim and flatish top (they shaped it to be a pseudo porkpie-fedora mix, which is what I would like to do as well)? I am working on building a 1930s style surfboard to use as a paddleboard (have a 1930s pic of one being used as such), so was thinking a period canvas hat would go well with it.

Thanks,
Adam C.

Due to the deposable nature of the canvas hat not many make to a vintage status. Most where work wear or worn when a good hat would get damaged from the wear they would get. They do get pricey when one shows up on the bay.:)

Not sure if you would be interested but you might check out this hat by Quaker Marine.

I bought one and it came in a lot darker than pictured, the brim is very stiff but the crown is pretty floppy, also the crown is much taller than you typically find on a canvas hat.

If you would like I could take a picture of it setting next to my Filson packer hat for size comparison.

This one is half canvas, half straw fabric, but the construction is the same as it would be on an all canvas hat of the period.

A '60s version. Same construction/styling as it would have been in the '30s or '40s, but with a slightly narrower brim.
