Out of interest, which features do you think gives it away as an American suit from the 1920s, rather than a later suit as claimed by the vendors? (My thought was that the flat front on the trousers made it less likely to be 1940s)

It rather reminded me of all those continental black suits that keep turning up (especially from Germany).

If it is an American suit from the twenties, it will be a nice buy for someone (so long as the price stays low).

The lapel shape to me, says late 1920s (maybe early 30s). What made me think it is American is the style of the watch pocket. But looking at the shoulders, now, I'm not so sure. It could in fact be British or European, especially with that small lower inner pocket in the lining. I do have an American suit from the very early 30s with shoulders like that.

Who knows. if someone's go the cash to pay for reweaving, I think that suit might be a good buy.

Also, note how close together those fastening buttons are. That, to me, says 1920s.

Yes, but would they be higher in the 20s? I don't know.

I didn't even spot the watch pocket! Good point about the close buttons giving it a 20s feel. Also, now that I'm looking at the legs, which apear to narrow quickly and (unless its the way it was photographed) have the look of a very slight flare. I have an idea that leg would fit with a 20s style?

Highly unlikely to be 40s - unless its one of those hotel staff/waiter/musician suits that crop up from time to time (I showed one on the British suits thread a few months back). But that was what initially came to mind for me.
