Yep. I figured that's the way to measure. The illustration is helpful because I see some measurements online from brim to brim. I don't see where that would be as helpful as measuring the opening.
Thanks Lost Cowboy for the advice.
I see your point on resale with the small size hats. I'll stick with the 6 7/8s.
And they do seem to be cheaper sometimes with some sellers being very negotiable on offers.
This is a learning experience and an enjoyable one at that.
I bought this dark blue Resistol Jet 707 off eBay.
This hat has the tag under the sweatband. The paper United Hatters size tag fell out of it.
It's got some minor damage on the front of the sweatband but it fits well and looks more blue than in the photos.
Anyone have an idea on the age of it?
On the subject of sellers, I know it's been posted about in some of the posts that I have read...
The more I learn about fedoras I have to chuckle at some of the listings on eBay.
Brand names that don't match tags in photos, "original" boxes with a different brand name, size tags in photos that...
Thanks Lost Cowboy.
I measured my head for circumference so I know that part. I didn't know about measuring and dividing by pi. That method puts me really close to the 6 7/8. I have been going by online size charts by inches.
I did not know about the long oval. I haven't tried one and so far...
In your experiences do you think there is some variation in size between different hat makers? I suppose when I buy used hats some of them could have been stretched to some degree by a previous owner? It's kind of a risk buying online and some hats fit really well and I have found a few that...
Another HAS purchase from eBay.
It's my first 3 x. It's worn but in nice condition. I didn't do anything with the crease and pinches. Just used a lint roller on it. Cleaned up well. It's one of my better buys. I'm finding that fit can be loose on some hats. Not with this one.
Here's another fedora I picked up from the 'bay.
It's a modern Knox in a blue color. Got it cheap and looks like it's hardly been worn. Fits well too.
The center crease stays but I have to do some steaming and use a stiffener on the pinches.
Here's a hat I got off ebay recently.
I like the fit and the look of it.
It's a Malrov and from what I could find for information they were a hat company from Minneapolis that have been out of business for a long time.
Hi. I just joined a few days ago after getting interested in wearing fedoras. I have learned a lot from lurking and reading here before joining.
I have collected a few older hats off the 'bay and one is a Dobbs that I suspect is not as old as I thought. I was thinking 60s. But the price on the...
