The hard thing for me is waiting beyond the stated estimated timeline. I'm good with what the craftsman tells me (8-10 weeks, etc.) But on week 11, I break out in a cold sweat.
I don't know how much internet searching you have done but another category (loosely defined) is ranch/barn coat. They seem to be in the same cut as a field jacket. Here are some finds I used to figure out the look I was going for:
"Ranch" coat
"Barn" coat
Field Jacket
I'm taller, not...
Apparently, vintage heads weren't that big. If you go new, I would recommend custom. It is not nowhere near as hard as trying to get a custom leather jacket. There are loads of great hatmakers mentioned on this forum. I can personally recommend Gannon and Wolfbrae as I have used each and they...
I'm a fan of car coat styles, though they can be a little boxy or baggy. Also, a field jacket style is a little longer than flight/moto styles and cut more form-fitting.
Don't forget to figure out if your head shape is regular oval (RO) or long oval (LO). (Maybe that's the 4 letters you were asking about.)
According to consensus on TFL, most heads are LO. If you have some kind of hat shop near you (even if it's western), go try on the different shapes in your...
I wear western hats but I can help with some insight...
- How do crushable fedoras work and if it's such a great solution why aren't they all like that?
Crushable fedoras are most always (if not always) wool. Crushable hats just don't look as "dressy."
- It's cold where I live. Is it beaver...
Elwood: Shit.
Jake: What?
Elwood: Rollers.
Jake: No.
Elwood: Yeah.
Jake: Shit.
------
Jake: How often does that train go by?
Elwood: So often you won't even notice.

Weird. I can't say that is my experience in the Midwest. USPS has been strangely efficient (although I haven't had any deliveries since hurricane Milton.)
Just out of curiosity, what delivery service do you think is the best right now (in the USA)? USPS, FedEx, UPS, or other (Amazon doesn't count)?
With the new addition of the wolfbrae nutria (far left) all of the sticks are now full.
I am an everyday hat wearer but not a hat collector, so this is the extent of my felt and straw collection.
Wolfbrae delivers another winner!
Earlier this week, I received this black nutria western weight from Robert.
He stretched and he pulled but the provided felt would only yield a 6" crown and a 4" brim (I asked him to try to get a 6.5" x 4.5" if he could). Still, it's a beautiful hat.
I dig...
Great looking jacket. I am a first time customer of Johnson Leathers. Alan told me the wait list would take about 10 weeks. So my questions to you are: When you said it was a 4 month process, did that include all your planning time? What wait list time did JL quote you and how close were they to...
Sure... All of this is old hat (appropriate pun - fully intended) to the veterans of the lounge, but for anyone who may be new to hats and curious.
Also, it is still a decent sub-10 minute video. (OK maybe this is a little mean, but the narrator sounds a little like Nisus Wettus from The Life...
Long(er) jackets... All Day Long. (Appropriate pun.) My opinions and tastes are in a distinct minority in this forum.
- I like the length of field jackets and car coats.
- I can't stand belts on any jacket shorter than a trench coat.
I also don't like all the pockets on the field jacket nor do...
Nothing wrong with that coat or the fit (appearance wise). Just my 2 cents. I'm no expert on fit, hang, drape, etc. but no matter what, that's a great looking coat.
