I guess from Vienna you could get to Africa for $800. Sadly for those of us on the Left Coast of N. America it's LOT more. And that jacket is nonsense, anyway.
As it turns out, there IS a new Defender. And it might not even be too terrible. Diehard traditionalists will doubtless object to the more aerodynamic body and grumble mightily about 'the damned gov-mint makin' all them fake safety and mileage demands" but it might just turn out fairly well...
One would be a good thing to keep an eye on eBay for. I have a zillion pocket, wrinkle free sports coat from TravelSmith that is perfectly practical but lacks the style of the Tilley.
I spent last deer and elk seasons in a well-built, properly equipped wall tent. My new hunting partner loves tents. This coming deer season I will be in a guided hunt cabin and during elk season I will be on a river cruise in France. We'll see how 2020 turns out . . .
Ah yes, the Land Cruisers of the '70's. Classic safari cars for wherever your safari is going. Thanks Mike. That's a great reference. I'm going to keep my eye open. One of those would be just what the NCO (ret.) needs.
Must take and post picture, but I just got hold of a Sauer & Sohn double rifle in 7x57R. Now I need the Zeiss scope and some claw mounts. It's going to Italy next May. Boar beware!
After my first safari, I came down with an acute desire for a Toyota Landcruiser pickup with safari seat behind the cab and a winch for that express purpose. Then I discovered that I couldn't get one in the US. Poo!
Oh S**t! There's an Alfa-Romeo Spider for sale about 17 miles away and it's under $4K. Quick, Sarge, get rational. You don't have a garage, it's full of woodworking machinery. You really could make use of a pickup. Think of all the metric tools you'll need to get, etc., etc. I'm really...
So I went into the local gun store looking for this:
And there, sitting forlorn in a case, was this!
So what was I supposed to do? I 'needed' the Ruger but a 1948 S&W K-22 Masterpiece? On sale because no-one else wanted it?
Yeah, I got 'em both. And guess which one is the sweeter...
