Necessity
I'm fair-skinned and began wearing brimmed hats on hikes as a boy scout, then continued doing so in the field as an archaeologist and outdoors in general as I began to lose my hair. However, Samuel Spade and Nick Blaine hooked me on nicer fedoras for dress wear.
I wouldn't want to go with only one, but if I had to, It'd probably be my fawn Akubra Leisure Time. It goes with almost anything, keeps my head either warm or shaded, and is tough as nails.
That said, I'd also have to consider my sage 40's Stetson with black band.

Following Matt's suggestion, I just left a couple of Stetson fedoras and an Akubra with Baron of California Hats (they're a stone's throw from Disney Studios in Burbank) for a re-block to long oval (Stetsons) and a reblock to reduce the Akubra by two full sizes. I'll report next week on the...

I, too, just bought a Stetson Chatham last week. It is definitely a snap brim, and mine trends downward, rather than straight out. You might try turning the brim from further towards the back of the crown.
