OH-KY
I am a transplanted Buckeye, living just accross the river in Fort Thomas KY.
I enjoy the rivalry and am amused by the misconceptions each has of the other. It's mostly in good fun.
Gus Miller at Batsakes is a gem. I have several hats he made for me, including a top hat! I confess I...
Do not go gently into that good night...
How I envy all of you! I love cardigans and have thought often this season of finally buying one but can't pull the trigger on it. Somehow, Ozzy Nelson haunts me, and the Uncle Joe Carson (Edgar Buchanan) character from Pettycoat Junction. Both my...
lining
Of course, it's personal preference but I agree with Atterbury Dodd on this. The leather lining seems like such a good thing but this is one drawback. Wearing holes out in the lining is another.
LOUNGE-time learning
Dinerman, I have learned something. (Don't tell Mrs. F: She's convinced it's not possible) This selection suggests that snaps were the norm and not the exception. Thanks! Still have the 'snapless' Tom Joads in the works but I am satisfied he just might have had the...
Big Tent
Carldelo, that's what I think too. The Lounge is a big, welcoming place. It's big enough to allow all of us who love hats of whatever sort (except for beanies, perhaps, but that's for another thread), to show and tell and argue. I think only MK speaks for the lounge because, uh, he...
Snappy patter
PoohBang, thanks for your help. I think I'll be happier with a 'snapless' hat since I can't get a definitive photo of the hat to show a snap and it's my impression that caps without the snaps were more common, so a better representation of the time. Perhaps some Lounger has the...
Snappy hats
Thanks. I am hampered by lack of samples or pics. The movie version of Tom Joad's hat does not show any snaps so that's what I need. The source above looks just right and Michael at Hatterdashery is interested in recreating this cap too.
Late as usual
It wasn't until I began recreating Tom Joad's costume from Grapes of Wrath, that I discovered that most newsboy, or 8/4 or Gatsby hats, whatever you call them, now have those execrable snaps on the brims. The last ones I bought, 8 years ago or so, were tweed Borsalinos that did...
Akubra
Since last fall, I have bought four Fed IV's from Hats Direct. I have been surprised how quickly they arrive-usually in a week. They arrive well packed and the hats themselves are the ones I like best, except for my vintage Dobbs light gray. They are easy to bash and even the 'standard'...
Myself, I can't bear to pierce the cloth of a dress shirt collar. That limits its use ever after. I recall some shirts actually made with holes in the collar points for these bars.
Swank is a brand that has indeed been around for a long time. It's no Tiffany but everyday mens jewelry. I have...
