Shake Sugaree - Elizabeth Cotten; just fell in love with this song! Next up, Bing and Satch do Gone Fishin'!

Architectural history lost: "It's gone, Jim."

thunderw21, I remember that fire but I wasn't familiar with the buildings. Really too bad. And I share your pain regarding the destruction of historical buildings; Des Moines is absolutely notorious for the practice. We have numerous empty parking ramps and grassy lots to show for it. We...

    Your alter Golden-age ego?

I wish I were as slick, confident and good looking as Cary Grant in some of his Hitchcock roles.

What we have to put up with!

I don't disagree with you, but I suggest taking additional consideration. All of us come to the Lounge with different sets of skills, ideas, and strengths. As a result, some of us aren't as developed in our ability to turn a calloused cheek to this kind of derision. I think it's better to...

What we have to put up with!

How unfortunate; and the man calls himself a doctor? Too bad. He should consider not judging books by their cover, lest someone do the same to him. (which I am doing as we speak ;) )

What we have to put up with!

I'm not sure why I even read that article, if you could call that "blog entry" and article. But I suppose that's what passes for "opinion" articles now. In any case, I was no more offended by this article than I would be offended by a NASCAR fan passing judgement on a ball game, or 5th grader...

Finances in the Golden Era and today

Which brings to mind the WWII-era Donald Duck cartoon in which Donald is tempted to spend his dough at the bar, while his Uncle Scrooge tries to keep him patriotic. It was a dark cartoon for Disney, but quite interesting.

    Show us your Guns!

I think sport shooting, reloading and firearms proficiency (along with firearms collecting later down the road) were valid aspects of life during the post-WWII years (50's-60's and beyond) when men were coming home and mixing their recent experience of firearms with their need for recreational...

When did the Slide Toward Casual Begin in Earnest?

I think you're on to something Lizzie (i.e. when did we start letting ourselves get too comfortable). I think it must have been the 60's and 70's when the anti-establishment movement really started gaining steam among the youth of the country; with earlier roots in both post-war eras. It...

    Any writers?

lol Yes! I know this feeling! I wish it wasn't part of my writing process either, but it's definitely helped scrap three books and really built a wedge between two more. I often watch movies, too, just to get my mind back on track. I already read alot of non-fiction, but it's typically...

    Any writers?

Do any of you writers ever find yourself suffocated by a project, so you take a week or two (or in my case a few months) away from it? What do you do to get back in the swing? Here's my example: I usually try not to read anything that I think would influence my current projects, but from time...

When did the Slide Toward Casual Begin in Earnest?

I think there are many factors, too many to count, that have moved us from "formal" to "casual". Technology, fashion, utility, culture, etc. Consider that at one time, a fedora was considered rude and redneck; a man of standing wore a stiff bowler, homburg, or top hat. That shifted in the...

:offtopic: And here I'd read the title of this thread as if you were trying to carbon date one of us. Schucks!

This one stood out the most to me as well. Tall crown, back bow, side dents - real sharp hat. Thanks for the pics! :eusa_clap

    Your signature cocktail.

No, but sometimes when I'm feeling snotty, I'll throw a cherry on top! ;)

    Any writers?

You know, I'm not very good a genre fiction - I'm more literary. My stories seem to ramble and go nowhere, but all the while in the background text, something is brewing. And in the end, I try to leave the reader both shocked and satisfied.

    What Games Amuse you

I like poker, Crazy 8's, Mexican Train dominoes, chess or black jack if there's a large crowd to play. I'm also fond of Apples to Apples, and Trivial Pursuit.
