I agree--the Scala straws are great but that is where it begins and ends. Interestingly, I just bought a Scala beach style straw hat to replace the one that my dog ate. Swallowed it whole.
Sloe Gin is great stuff--in England they often give out shots of it to guns on a shoot, although Whisky Mac (Ginger Wine and Scotch) and "Chisky" (cherry bran
dy and Scotch) are also traditionally flasked for those sorts of occasions. I think that you can make good cocktails from it, like Sloe...
Just tuned in to a broadcast by KUSC of a concerto for trombone composed for Tommy Dorsey. Only ever played Carnegie Hall, the Hoolywood Bowl and then KUSC. Great stuff!
My favorite time of year--baseball season overlaps college football. I love the fact that much of the sports merchandise that one can buy is retro in its look--not only team brands but vintage jerseys, caps from Orvis, J. Peterman, etc. Today I will wear my father's 1951 vintage USC hat in...
Rereading an old but obscure favorite, "Parties" by Carl Van Vechten. Must read for anyone on this blog. Actual cocktail recipes contained therein (The Kinkajou is a favorite).

just went back and saw the post==glad you found the Dobbs! Going to Santa barbara to buy hats is no hardship and yes, the owners are terrific. That can't be said for a local hat shop I go to in Pasadena--the Hat Mart on Colorado. The owners are nasty and even though I have bought a few things...
Just stumbled upon a hat store in Santa Barbara right on State Street. The shop is called the Green and Yellow Basket (Chick Webb plays Santa Barbara!) and while it is a general his-n-hers holiday/vacation shop, they have a surprisingly good selection of men's hats--Stetson being the highest...
Listening to Glenn Miller--I love his take on the nursery rhyme the three little pigs, "The Booglie Wooglie Pig" about a hep little piggy that did the Lindy all the way home...... Also listening to the Dead live in Egypt in "78
Rum Punch--trying to recapture the magic of John-o's in Anguilla..... I made it with orange and pineapple juice, Havana Club Cuban rum, a floater of Amaretto and a twist of nutmeg. Sundowner par excellance! Alec Waugh, Evelyn’s older brother, claimed that the classic formula for punch is one...
There is a scene in the 1963 movie "Charade" starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in which Grant takes off his tie tack, unravels a threat from his sock, and uses the tack and string to trip Audrey's hotel room door to see if she leaves or not. It is the only time I can remember seeing Grant...
