Well, I could definitely see where this would come from, as the lining is essentially just underneath the pleats and is not expandable like the pleats are. The only way I could see this working would be for the lining to be somewhat loosely installed.
Of course, I'm anything but an expert on...

I've have yet to see a hat marketed as being crushable that is, in fact, non-crushable.
If it says it'll work, it will. I've owned several crushable hats over the years and they always retain their shape very easily.
I'd say go for it. And try crushing it sideways - flatten it.
That's a tough one.
The frames themselves are very reminiscent of 30's and 40's reading glasses...but the flip-up lens trend didn't really kick off until the 60's (I believe).
Those are very hard to date. They could be anything from the 1930's to the 1980's, to be honest.
