...Is replacing the ribbon the way to go? Are there other brands/models that have the shape and qualities of the Fed IV that I mentioned above that I like, but with a more casual ribbon? I'm aware of the Campdraft similarities, but it doesn't have the dimensional brim or raw edge.
Thanks in advance!
Here's another comparison, my new BGG Campdraft with my 1960s Stetson 3x. The 3x is not technically an Open Road but meets the same dimensions as older ORs. Also, these two hats have the same measurements. Not surprisingly. Neither of these hats has had a crease yet.
I finally got my Bluegrass Green Campdraft today after 5 months. It's much darker than I figured it would be, but every hat is different. It's a beauty. I went with a cattleman crease.
Hazy and 79F in the west foothills of the Cascade Range so this is a two-black-hat day. Started with the Hufvud Bogart 50x Beaver for morning errands and switched to the Campdraft for afternoon fun.
One more question, how do you change at the point front and back pinch? Do you just push it up and down till you reach your desired height, and how much space should it be left inside the crown for your head? As I know the head shouldn't touch the tip of the crown if I am correct?
...not to have a noticeable burn, but it was still painful enough, albeit fortunately briefly.
Agreed on all counts. I can't speak to the Campdraft on this - I've only had one, the Deluxe - but having had both deluxe and regular Federations, my experience has been that the regular Fed (100%...
Oh, believe me, this is nothing on the rows I've seen (genuinely) spark out once or twice over the years in the Rocky Horror community over whether we dance the Timewarp or the Time Warp. (The latter is, of course, correct.) ;)
I think you're right about it being a 'two words aesthetic' thing...
Yes I am aware Heston hat is shorter on the brim than Campdraft and that's not bothering me, my main thing was if 5 1/2 would be tall enough for that kind of rake and from your answer I am now confident it will be. Thanks for the shared knowledge :)
The Campdraft is going to have a wider brim than the hat Heston is wearing in that picture. His brim looks to be either a 2 1/2 or a 2 5/8 as compared to the Campdraft's 2 3/4 brim. Not sure what the open crown height is on his hat. Could be either a 5 1/2 or even 6 inches. In any event, yes...
You can shape it dry without fear of 'spidering' & when you have the crease you want, you can block it in & tweak it with steam. Any kitchen appliance which can give you a good jet of steam (a tea kettle is ideal) is fine, some folks even manage over a pan of boiling water. If you're not doing...
So I ordered Campdraft, still waiting to come and from what I read some folks here prefer water spraying and others prefer steam. I'm not sure which one should be better or easier on the hat? On an Akubra official site, they recommend steaming it.
Could I dry bash it without the spidering of...
Yes, there's nothing in my experience to touch them in terms of a production line hat for that price.... and once you get into spending much more than that, custom starts to offer better value than OTR imo.

You're very welcome buddy. I believe you'll find the Campdraft to be a good choice for its versatility. Whether Campdraft or Fed IV, or any other style, my experience with Akubra is that they make a solid hat that should you last many years.
