I was watching some old movies that I used to love as a kid, and one of them was from 1981; "Under the Rainbow" starring Chevy Chase, Carrie Fisher, Billy Barty, and Mako. Anybody here remember this film? It has been called many things, mosty crap... even by Fisher... but I think it's no worse...
I'd say it'll cost between $60 and $100, depending on who does it, and how "raw" the body is. If all it needs is a ribbon and shaping, that's one thing... but a sweatband, pouncing, liner; it all adds up.
John's advice is best. Talk to Art, Optimo, JP... I've lost track of all the guys...
I've never owned a straw Akubra, but I noticed their felt hats have the same overly-round shape that you describe. Mine gradually conformed to the shape of my head. However, if the hat is very stiff or the front is painfully tight, you might need the next size up.
Well, I've used tape for stubborn dust and lint, and a lint brush (the red velvety kind). But my first "brush" was and still is an unused, soft bristled paintbrush.

Art, I just bumped into this thread. I can't say "put my on a list" for a predictable purchase, but you know I love light, soft hats. However, I can barely wear straw in the summer, never mind felt. If it's still an option when the weather gets cooler (and the wallet gets fatter), I'm...
Don't go by those on-line swatches at all. They are terrible. I have the Campdraft in Taupe Fawn. I would describe it as a dark tan or very light brown. Very earthy, not bright in any way. I've found the color goes with quite a bit, and I wear khakis a lot. The Tawny Fawn of the Federation...
The hat came with that bash. The felt is pretty soft by today's standards, but the block is in there pretty good. I'm not sure how much reshaping could be done at home with just steam and water. I don't see why it couldn't be reblocked to an open crown by a good hatter.
In addition to the previously posted Milan, I'm auctioning off two near and dear pals.
