Your two best Routes
In my humble opinion, you have two good choices. Both are mail-order. My first suggestion is to go to Hatsdirect.com and find the Federation or Federation Deluxe. Even with shipping, they cost less than most hats sold in the US, and both of those hats come in sizes up to...
Karol is right. Akubra discontinued the light gray over a year ago. Hats Direct tried to get me a left-over but had no luck. I have found that a light gray that's darker than Silverbelly is close to impossible to find in an off-the-shelf hat. The only modern hats I've seen in a light gray...
Here's one of my first hats! It's wool Lite Felt, but better than the Lite Felt that they sell today. It's from the 90's. I wore it quite a bit, and it has held up nicely. The felt is soft an crushable, but not floppy. The outer band is braided suede, cloth inner sweat indicating "Britches...
Yep, the Brent is back. I still haven't gotten rid of the thing, so here we go again. It needs a new lining, new sweatband, and a reblock. That's probably it. Size 6 7/8, the felt, ribbon, and brim binding are prestine. It is Brown, it is cheap, and it needs a new home. I'd be happy to...
Yeah, I missed that one. I think I missed a lot during my relocation (which took a long time). It kind of bums me out, but I totally understand his decision. Keep us posted on other renovators.

I've thought about getting one of their other styles with a bound edge, but with a higher crown, then replacing the ribbon with something more like the Squatter has.
NB
DOUGLAS; I like the shape of your Squatter. I don't really like the Squatter much - plenty of brim but too little crown - but you really pull it off. :eusa_clap
SIMON; Yes, the Gray Federation has a great blue characteristic to it. It's quite nice.

Fellow COW Member opinion
I'm on COW as well, Real Henry, and I love a good Indy hat (which can be hard to come by, in my opinion). But I have to agree with your choice to not turn the Mallory into something it's not. Not such a nice specimen, anyway. I would encourage you to consider...
The answers seem clearer now
Simon,
Since you have an AB, I'd agree with skipping the brown Fed. The Gray Fed is very dressy looking, and a dark Gray. You sound like more of a relaxed-but-classy kind of guy, so I'd recommend the Campdraft in the Fawn color. It dresses up or down easily...
Don't fear a softer Fed
The shape will hold fine. In fact, it may get better. My Fed developed a nice swoop to the sides as the stiffener weakened. I could easily train the brim to it's original shape, but It looks so much better now.

Alright, this hat has a story, short as it may be. I actually purchased this hat from The Wingnut... I want to say last year, but I'm not sure. Anyway, the hat was in good shape, but needed cleaning and such. So, I handed it over to our resident Hat Doctor, Art Fawcett. It has been cleaned...
Fantastic
Art wasn't kidding when he said that Steel was a beautiful color. What a hat... not that I'm surprised.
BTW, Art, your website isn't working, in case you didn't know.

A Hard Choice to Make
I have one fawn Campdraft, which is a great hat, but I've never put it to the severe weather test. It just worked out that way. I love the color, and I wear a great deal of browns, tans, and the like. I also own four (yes four) Federations; Gray, Black, and two...
I think this is steel. The designed was a modified "Sportaire". Nothing in my collection comes close. The only reason I haven't ordered another from Art is that I can't decide what to get! (So many hats, so little money)...
Enjoy the Campdraft!
I think I was one of the early owners of the Campdraft on the Lounge, and I have to say it's one great hat. The Campdraft and the Fed both come highly recommended by me! Enjoy them!

Welcome Aboard!
Bob,
If you have access to a store that sells hats, it's best to go look and try things on to see what you like. The Country Gentleman stuff (wool felt, mainly) can probably be found in major department stores like Macy's this time of year. If you can't find stuff to try in...
