I have not seen any off-the-shelf production hats that have a tall untapered crown with a bash already in it... at least not under the price of a custom from Art, Steve, Graham, or Ken. Once you pass the $150 mark, you might as well go custom.
If it's just that you're afraid of an open...
Art, if you're thinking about an AB; send a picture of your melon to Steve and tell him you want the right size brim for your face. He's very good at figuring out how to get the look right. My AB's brim is larger than WEEGEE's but doesn't look any bigger on my head. I don't know if Camptown...
Finally, a reason to watch a Brendan Frasier movie! lol
Well, good for you Art.
[bad] And the Hatman That Shall Remain Nameless.
:fedora: :cool2: :cheers1:
I love it! If you can find one from a few years ago that has the optional 45 ACP cylinder, get it! You hardly feel the recoil, and it's really fun to shoot! I think the Vaquero is also available in a .44, but I've only shot a .44 Colt with cowboy loads. I can't vouch for the .44 Ruger...
Edward,
I really think that the Fed Deluxe is not worth the extra cash. The finish is notorious for being uneven, and if you are anal-ret about it, you'll be doomed.
The regular Fed is an awesome hat, and I think a better deal overall. I don't have comparison pictures, but the regular has a...
There are some sweet guns here. Being a bit of gun-nut, I must share my collection... yes, I said collection. I have decided not to buy more unless I find something unusual, since I have so many.
My Model 10 S&W .38
My single-action Rugers (two 45's an a .22 Mag)
So as not to clog...
I know how you feel. A good gray hat is hard to find. The Fed has a black ribbon, and is dark gray felt. If you want more of a medium gray, I'd go with a Camptown or rabbit JPD. Unless you want to go up a price bracket, in which case I highly recommend Art Fawcett.
NB
Paddy,
As most will tell you, the Federation is great. Here's a couple of shots of my gray Fed;

David,
I'm not surprised at your reaction. I suspect that you haven't had too many (if any) previous "hat mistakes" and first hand lessons. If I didn't have my own trial and error experiences, I would not have a clue what set my Fawcett's apart. The thing is, sometimes even a "bad" hat can...
Miller's are ok for the money. Actually, they are made by Biltmore. Strictly dress hats, though. They don't do well in foul weather. Still, they get the job done - I used to be a major supporter of Miller Hats... until I was spoiled by Mr. Fawcett! :eusa_doh: If you want something better...
The Campdraft does not have a dimensional cut brim, and it is not really the same hat with different ribbon, but it's close. The crown is the same, but the brim is bound, it's not dimensional cut, and the felt is a little different. At least that's how mine is. I also find that the Campdraft...
Most people have (and will) back the AB first. In terms of a tough but beautiful hat, it's great. I also agree with Magnoli that if you don't plan to beat on it severely, his HJ's will probably be great (I have one on the way). But, Thunderbolt expressed interest in a Last Crusade style that...
Correction... 'Twas a homburg.
I've seen that done before, on purpose. I think some old-time actors and musician used to do that, but maybe somebody more familiar with vintage personalities would know better.
NB
It's just sweat, straight up, no twist.
I carry a hankie for that, too... but it soaks through just as well. The summers are brutal on me, and my hats.
Well, I try a few things as mentioned and let you know what happens.
NB
I'm kind of bummed, but I got sweat stains on a hat ribbon that is not replacable. It was just one of those really hot days, and the hat saved my noggin from the sun, no doubt, but not without injury. My sweat soaked clean through! :(
Any home-remedies that don't involve removing the...
I have never bought from them, but I know of quite a few people who really like them. I hear they add stiffener to their hats, but that might only be some models. Best to contact them directly.
I like the Tortona very much. Looks perfect for you!
NB
The Campdraft is a really nice hat. I have the same one, same color (tawny something?).
Fletch; I bought my C-Draft at the same time as my first Federation, and as I recall the Fed was stiffer and heavier out of the box. Both break in wonderfully, though. The Campdraft breaks in faster...
The Fed is one of the largest out there because it has the wide brim and the tall crown. It scares a lot of people at first, but I think it reflects the fact that hats are smaller affairs these days. Yet, I get more compliments on them than any other hats (I have several Feds), and I have...
