For those worried about Akubra sizing, keep in mind that every hat brand has it's own sizing quirks. Plus, Akubras are really based on the cm measurement, and don't always translate perfectly into other size types. Besides, the slightly snug Akubras are probably the right size, but they are...
I'm pretty sure that all current Akubra grays are dark, including the ones posted above. I think they stopped all their light grays due to poor sales. :( I'd love a light or mid-gray Campdraft. Alas!
I've been pondering the possibility of getting a black fedora custom made, and maybe going for a ribbon or brim edge binding that is not black. Has anyone tried this? If so, I'd like to see some pictures and hear suggestions.
NB
No, but like RBH I have a Campdraft.
Not at all. Most cowboy style hats have big brims and no binding... and are stiff enough to beat somebody silly with it! lol
I actually have a bond edge VS hat in granite, and I find the edge can make the brim look smaller against a darker background (the edging is darker, so it "disappears"), and larger against a light one. But that's just looking at it sitting there. On my head, a bound edge looks a little wider...
All I know is, it's a bad idea to remove an edge binding on cheaper hats, and on on better ones, the edge may need sanding.
Otherwise, it's just a matter of what looks good. If I see a hat I like, binding or not, I like it. If I dream up a custom hat, I just go with my vision either way...
To put it bluntly... it's ain't worth your time. :( Watch a rerun of a documentary on Court TV or something. It'll leave you better entertained and better informed.
Actually, there's a tag on the hat that explains the band. It's not leather - it's fish skin!
Also, I took more pics in the sunlight and added them to my album (a few posts back).
Oh, my hat came by UPS. And the down-turn is made so the brim stays down all the time. Snap brims look like they are up all the way around, but are softer and springy so you can just tug it down in front, in back, sides, or whatever you like. This is sort of the standard fedora type.
I got the Banjo this evening. The light is not good in my house - best was the bathroom (sorry guys) but I took some quick pics. It has the same Imperial Quality liner as the regular Federation, and fits about the same. Great Sand color. It's a bit stiffer than the Fed, but not as stiff as...
I thought they came pre-bashed... no matter, I like bashing my own. I'll probably go for a tear drop crown with a high and tight pinch. I'll have to see it first. Same goes for the ribbon decision. Some hats actually look good with a leather band.
As for why; In my case, I've read many...
Yeah! No kidding Dominus. I just called! I've been stalling on the Banjo hat for a long time, and she thinks she has one in my size left, and one other! I'm passing on the Adventurer. I have two brown Federations and an AB, so that's one less person for the rest of you to compete with. lol...
I was told that these glasses date roughly to the 1940's. The frames measure 4 1/2 inches across (post to post). Lenses are original, I do not know the prescription. Lenses could easily be replaced. Silver-tone metal frames and lenses could use some cleaning, but otherwise in great shape...
The darker regular Federations kind of bleed color a little when they get wet. The black one does it the most, and the Mid-Brown does it a little bit. I've never been caught in a downpour with my black Fed, but I've used water to help shape it. My fingers turned black. It has something to do...
