Things You Learn as an Old Car Driver

If I showed up at Trotter's B/A station in 1968 looking like that I would have been fired on the spot. I am not kidding. We wore uniforms which we paid for ourselves. They had to be clean and pressed. Black bow tie and cap. Shoes shined. Washrooms cleaned twice a day. Lot swept and flowers...

Things You Learn as an Old Car Driver

"I've discussed doing such a thing at our shop, if the car end takes off. It was a Sinclair Station/Car Dealership, built in 1951" OK but this time I want more than 90 cents an hour.

Vacuum wipers and 6 volt electrics worked well for years and are still adequate if not sensational. But 50+ years of use take their toll and old cars do require maintenance.

    One Summer -America 1927

It is not surprising not many remember the celebrities of 1927 after 86 years. What is astonishing is that so many were remebered for so long. Not only Ford, Capone, Tunney and Lindbergh but Gloria Swanson, Charlie Chaplin, Man O' War,Jack Dempsey, Bill Tilden, Bessie Smith, Jesse Livermore and...

Things You Learn as an Old Car Driver

I remember all those things. I used to be the friendly pump attendant who filled your tank, washed your windows, checked your oil, and pumped up your tires. I even wore a clean blue shirt, a black leather bow tie and a cap. I was 13 years old when I had my first gas station job.

Things You Learn as an Old Car Driver

"How do you gain access to the seat? Other than, with a great deal of difficulty." If you take a close look you will see a step plate on the rear fender (wing). You open the rumble seat and climb in over the side. A good place for young couples to cuddle, not suited for the elderly...

Things You Learn as an Old Car Driver

Old cars (before 1970 especially) require regular maintainance, much more than new cars. But they are designed so the work is easy and cheap to do. As long as they get regular attention they can be practically as reliable and trouble free as new cars. You know all those magazines and books from...

You might want to think twice about repainting. A quality job can cost $5000. I would suggest you get some good car wax and preserve what you have as long as possible.

If you drive a Chrysler product you find out what "left hand threads" means. If you drive a Ford or Chrysler product you find out what "6 volt, positive ground" means. The first time you descend a long hill you learn the wisdom of having a working hand brake. The second time, you learn...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

I have never hit a cyclist but 2 of them have hit me. Both hopped on their bikes and pedaled off quickly without checking if I was hurt. As an old time bicyclist and motorcyclist I am very aware of them as road users and give them plenty of space.
