I believe the main deck meant one of the more expensive cabins on the main deck of the ship. The cheaper cabins were below decks and the cheapest of all were steerage, below the water line, without even a porthole.
Tourist class was something they invented in the twenties to fill the cabins...
I agree. Sarcasm and irony, way overdone, stopped being funny a long time ago. What is more I watched Letterman's first late night show, and a few since, and in all that time he has never handed me a laugh. I see what he is trying to do but it always falls short, always seems lame. I thought...
That is funny, I watched The Big Sleep last night. Did you know there were 2 versions, the first 1945 version that was never released, and the one the public saw which was recut to include new scenes, made to capitalize on the Bogart-Bacall romance?
If you saw the movie, I believe they nailed...
Flash as in flashy, gaudy, ostentatious. It sounds like someone was running a gambling house for the Hollywood or Broadway crowd. People who had money to throw around and wanted to be seen doing it. People who thought they knew all about gambling and didn't.
Sort of like Las Vegas high rollers...
My guess is he bought the cheapest hats available, regarding them as props to be used up, smashed or lost in the filming of his stunts.
Yes I realize this thread is 8 years old. Just saying.
Can you tell me how many men were arrested for not showing a draft card, and what happened to them? I find it hard to believe that this was considered a serious crime after VJ day.
Today's official paranoia has no parallel in the past, outside of war time. It still surprises me how the US has meekly surrendered the Bill of Rights and Constitution. At other times in your history there were riots in the streets over issues that today would pass unnoticed.
The US of today...
How long do you think a cop would last if he arrested every slightly odd looking stranger who had committed no crime, except for seeming a little confused? He would get dressed down by his sergeant until he developed some common sense.
If you wore modern clothes in the past you would more...
Be careful of celluloid collars, they are highly flammable. When they were in common use there were occasional nasty accidents. I suppose the danger is small if you are careful.
Baldness was no stigma at all for most men. It was common place and accepted if you were no longer young.
That was a problem if you were in show business and played youthful roles. Hairpieces were not unknown among the population at large but were especially associated with actors.
There...
"no better than she ought to be" referring to loose morals. This was current in the US in the 30s although it may have been old fashioned by then, at least it has a Victorian ring to it.
James Thurber did a cartoon in the 30s with the caption "She didn't used to be any better than she ought...
Southern Ontario Canada, across Lake Ontario from Rochester. Very cold today -23C this morning but sunny and bright. Has now warmed up to -13 which is the warmest it has been all week. Tomorrow supposed to be -1.
A lot of movie costumes came from costume rental outfits. They maintained large warehouses full of all kinds of costumes. The stars would have costumes made for them, the rest got rentals. In the case of B movies often they rented everything.
The thing you use for leverage is more properly a "cheater pipe".
Speaking of pipes, does anyone remember "pipe dream" or "hitting the pipe" for someone with too much imagination? As in, smoking an opium pipe?
My father came from Kapuskasing where they don't call it winter until you can cross country ski over the telephone wires. Car companies from all over the world do their cold weather testing in Kapuskasing.
-20 today. I do believe this December set a record for cold and bad weather and it looks like January will follow suit.
The blizzard of 1977 near here, the road was closed north of Colborne for a week due to 10 foot snow drifts. They couldn't clear it with snow plows, they had to bring in...
A biography of Hitler I read recently said there were 2 kinds of messengers at that time. Dispatch riders who went to the front lines and messenger boys who served in the rear echelons, far from the front. Hitler was the latter and was in no danger from enemy fire.
It further stated, that these...

Later................
a web search tells me they are "metal lawn chairs" and they are still for sale although a little pricey, $69.99 for the Parklane to $169 for the Riviera.
