Based on the quality and condition (yes, even NOS condition varies) of the ones I have gotten, I'd say things were very evenly spread. That is supported by the fact that I "lust" for about the same proportion of hats remaining in relation to how many there are. ;)
After much internal debate, I have decided to let go of my vintage Dobbs Fifth Avenue. I like it enough that it has taken me several years to convince myself that I don't look right in it! :eusa_doh:
It is a deep chocolate brown, with supple but substantial felt. Size 7 1/2 (still true)...
In terms of Stetsons, I would say either the Chatham, or the open crowned Nostalgia. Given your tastes, the Nostalgia will probably make you happier. The shaped ones you've seen are just to show examples of shaping. Do not fear open crowns. In some cases, you won't even need steam. If you...
I tend to agree that auction behavior can be strange. However, sometimes there are forces at work that make rational things seem odd. For example, bidders may not be able to monitor the auction near it's end time, thus forcing them to bid ebay style (highest price willing to pay). Since...
I have to join the list of Art Fawcett owners; they are my most expensive lids, but also the ones I "feel" the least. If I rule out custom hats, I think I paid close to $200 for one of Johnnyphi's, but I could be wrong. Either way, the most I've paid for a non-custom hat was on one from...
I loved that hat. It's a vintage Open Road (probably early 60's), which I gave a simple center dent and pinch. It served me well but, alas, my noggin grew, and I had to let her go. I couldn't bring myself to resize a vintage hat. If my memory serves correctly, somebody here ended up with...
Now there's an interesting idea! It's possible that bWear or Hat People might be willing if you lack the skills yourself. What can they say? No? [huh]
Failing that, the New Era plaid photo you posted looks promising. If you don't like the snap, send the photo to a few other vendor to...
Here is a shot of me and K Steiner handing off a Moonstone Squatter a few years ago. For comparison purposes, my hat (right) was powder blue and I think Steiner's was silverbelly.
It shouldn't show dirt too badly, I would think.
Well, some may recall that one of mine is tornado proof! We could try that!
Honestly, though... I don't think my heart could survive what Adam would do to a VS.
The moonstone I saw was more or less a medium gray with a bluish cast to it, if I recall correctly. It is definitely not an overly light gray. I have never seen Akubra's Mid Gray, unfortunately.
Well, it's good to hear I wouldn't have to start from scratch because of the weather. I must admit, I have recently become aware of my tendency to be too well matched. I do it without thinking, but I'm working on a more effortless look.
I have no shortage of coats, but between my large size...
No rolling. It's called a Travel hat because it's based on the hat Indiana Jones wears while traveling. It should be comparable in weight to AB's felt, Oak tells me.
The felt grades on both versions of the Fed IV are the same as the old models. They have changed the dye slightly on the standard to get a better brown color, and pouncing has been improved on both versions, especially the deluxe.
I don't own one, but I've seen a few. The crown has a...
Didn't know where else to put this, since it kind of covers multiple garment-related areas. It's an issue for a man, but I'd like the opinions of the ladies, too.
Situation; You're stepping out for a nice occasion. You're plan is to wear a gray suit (or gray blazer with non-matching...
