I watched Romper Room. Unknown to me at the time of course, it was apparently the Stepford wives do preschool. All Romper Room teachers across the country were carbon copies of each other as much as possible. And Miss Jean had no compunction regarding shameless peddling of the RR swag. Do be a...
I was in my 20's through the 80s. Meh. It was just another decade we lived through. No more or less ridiculous than those that have come and gone since. Hindsight will show us the excesses of the current time as well.
I've realized that even with my own kids. This is part of the motivation I have to stop acquiring more than I already have. They have no interest in it and I do not wish to impose on them after I shuffle off of this mortal coil by forcing them to deal with all of "dad's old stuff."
My folks used to send out a bundle of Christmas cards. I recall them spending several evenings preparing them and writing notes in a certain number of them for people they had known in the past, mostly from my dad's time in the service. They always used Christmas seals on the envelopes. I...
We went through this with my mother's piano as well. We were not concerned with the money aspect, we simply wanted a good home for it. At the point of despairing ever finding it a home, a nearby small church contacted us asking if it was still available. We were relieved and they were happy to...
The lizard is not for me, but I had a pair of Luchesse boots years ago. They were ordered from the fellow I bought boots from at the time and then refused. He sold them to me for the balance owed, so they were priced right for me at the time. I've never had a better pair of boots since.
I am a user of cast iron, not a collector. I have several pieces (6 or 8) that are my regularly used cookware. I buy what I like, usually in somewhat rough condition, and restore it myself. I like the idea of using something that has served so well for so many decades.
My most recent and...
Thank you for sharing this. I somehow had missed it before. There was a fellow in my little hometown who had a few old Packards. Unfortunately be did not have sufficient funds to fully restore them, but they were fun to ride around in. My personal favorite of his collection was a Caribbean, I...
I'd agree with JB Weld being a good choice. Clean and prep the surface, mix it up and apply carefully. Set it aside until well cured and you should be good to go. I have been surprised more than once with how well it worked.
I have always thought that one of the things that made FDR so captivating for his radio audience was the fact that 90% of them had never heard that accent. I enjoy listening to his fireside chats a gain and a gain.
Unfortunately the link now takes me to a page of babies who look like middle age men and something about turkeys ruling the world.
I snoozed and loozed on this one. :(
In the mid 80's I was in Portland, Oregon. This was quite a revelation to a kid from a small town as far as driving went. Anyhow, they had a system of right on red without stopping at a fair number of intersections. As you might expect, the liberties taken with this system made driving there an...
I don't have any idea what all of it goes for, but some is used as fuel for diesel engines. It generally smells strongly of french fries when you run onto one fueled in this way.
