I have my Fed4 cutdown to not be a dimensional brim, not sure what you are referring to about the curve of the brim.
How less brim-width are you desiring? The flange of the brim can support a thinner brim but I'd not go less that 2 1/2" inches personally.

My take is original owners put their pins away separately from the hats then relatives or other folks find the hats & don't know the pins are associated...
