Things You Learn as an Old Car Driver

Here is wisdom: Old cars are a collection of mechanical problems all heading in the same general direction. If you have the patience/pocket depth to regularly repair a motor vehicle, an old car is a good choice.

    Vintage Coffee Makers

Ah. Looks like I will have to start buying the coffee now. The missus always gets the Food City brand and it was pretty good in the drop pots, but once we run out of what we have I'll start getting the ground in-store stuff. Is there any ready made coffee designed for percolators that's any...

    Vintage Coffee Makers

Old thread, but good info. I just bought a percolator coffee pot (brand new one, don't hate), and the coffee's considerably harsher than the drip pot that just went to the Coffee Shop In The Sky 2 weeks ago. Had completely forgot egg shells. We actually did that in the Navy in the mid-90s. Back...

    Show us your Guns!

http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=289203 More pix of my Krag. Hope the link's not unauthorized. Easier than posting a mess of Photobucket links.

    Show us your Guns!

It is an E.C. Bishop stock. Best I can tell, the checkering is handmade. Want more Kragpix?

    Show us your Guns!

Very true. We need to learn all we can from the legends while they are still about to learn from. That said, new Golden Era content: The ammo box predates 1954 and best I can tell is immediate postwar.

M/96 Swedish Mauser. The original of the M/38 above which BTW has its sling on backwards.

And Ode to the British Service Revolver

Must be a contrarian here. The fighting revolver IMHO was perfected in 1873 by (as the Brits would say) Colt's. A Cavalry Colt Single Action Army is a deadly fighting arm at most any visual range; the memoirs of Indian-era cavalrymen are full of accounts of shootouts with Indians out on the...

How Many Fedoras did you see today?

At the gun show today, saw 2-3 ORs (including mine) and an M1902 campaign hat. Rest were cowboy hats or ball caps. The OR is making a comeback of sorts in the shooting sports.

Why can't revolver guys count past six? They don't need to. Three .45 Colts, a Ruger Bisley Vaquero, a Stoeger/Uberti Bisley and an Allen Fire Arms/Uberti Cattleman.

I actually saw Lizzie on History Detectives on PBS.

Hospital etiquette (and general hat etiquette)

Admittedly, most of my Hat Etiquette is taken from military regs, but then again most men in the Golden Age were Veterans. That said, to my mind wearing a hat of any sort in any sort of medical facility is a bit much. Unless the hat is part of your working attire (food service, police, etc.).

What is your favorite aircraft of all time?

Seeing as to how we are adding jets, All time: F-8 Crusader. The MiG Master is a switchblade knife. My era in aviation: Tie between A-6 Intruder and F-14 Tomcat. Ironworks, Baby!

My new Peacoat advice. Too big ?

Nope, designed as an outer garment and sized accordingly. Wouldn't worry too highly much about that. Lot of times you will see that, as according to Regs the collar is never worn up.

My new Peacoat advice. Too big ?

You have got to understand the peacoat is intended to be worn over the Service Dress Blue uniform and is sized accordingly. Only thing I notice is according to Navy Regs the sleeves are just slightly too short for you.

Maybe OT: Took my first CPO test yesterday.

Vintage content: Brooks Brothers actually makes 'premium' Service Dress Blues, and the CPO "seabag" has only changed in detail since the Golden Era.

BUCKAROO BONANZA! - The Hats that Major Mike Moore Makes

Technically not one the Major built, but an old OR he reworked for me and I have worn in at least 2 countries.

    Skills For "Living The Era"

Addenda: On old Buicks, the accelerator pedal= the starter pedal. Addenda 2: 1956-65 Chryslers had a pushbutton shift mechanism for the automatic trans. You start and stop in Neutral and disengage the Park Latch via the lever marked "park".
