Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

I don't know that we, individually, change our behavior according to the way the wind blows, be it liberal, conservative or somewhere in between and, anyway, those are relative labels. Labels are usually to limited in meaning to be accurately apply, too. I have lived in a very small community...

Oh, they aren't like that at all "somewhere in England."

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

I agree generally but not entirely with most of what has been said, especially Miss Lizzie's comments about the rules. Rules aren't meant to be broken, of course. The scofflaw ignores the rules at everyone's peril. Think about the rules of the road, for a minute. I'm sure that in some people's...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

I am shocked! To think that a man would stoop that low! But what do I know? Although my father was only a truck driver with a modest income, we had a housekeeper. That was chiefly because my mother was an invalid (and did not make it to age 50). But the housekeeper I remember the best was a...

    Old gas stations

I see a Quonset hut in the background. Something like that deserves a thread, don't you think?

    The DINER.

Believe it or not, I've actually had dreams about places like that. A city diner, not necessarily big city. Even my hometown of around 7,500 (depending on the year) had a proper city main street diner, and in fact, it was named "Ferrell's Diner." It may or may not still be there. There was...

You know you are getting old when:

Although over the years I've seen many relatively rare and interesting cars, I still find the Rover 2000 and 3500 series the most attractive. The 3500 had a V8 and was a wonderful high-speed car, not that you could really do that risk-free anywhere that I know of. They were very solid cars, too...

Wearing a shirt with the collar popped up

"Loud!" Now that's another word you don't hear anymore, along with "sharp dresser." At least I never do. Never heard anyone referred to as a sharp dresser, which must tell you something about the company I've been keeping. Used only of men, of course.

Wearing a shirt with the collar popped up

I for one wouldn't think 1970s, even though I lived through that decade. The shirt, usually a sport shirt, worn over the jacket or coat collar, goes along with wide trousers, short back and sides haircut and so on, maybe even with brown and white shoes, not that I ever remember seeing anyone...

    Problems of Housing (1944)

That sounds like 1950s modern straight from the pages of Popular Mechanics. I have even seen many 1950s (mid-century, they say) modern houses and have even been in a few. They still look ever so modern, yet at the same time, look so dated. I've never seen one, however, that I would call large.

    Autism in the Golden Era

Yes, pretty much, but he clearly does not behave the same as others. One has to make an effort to treat him as "normal," whatever that is. I think the expression is high functioning. His language skills are mostly normal, with occasional stuttering. I don't think there are any distinguishing...

    Bush Jackets

I was issued an M52 field jacket when I was in the army at the same time others were issued the M65 model. I thought the M65 had a built-in hood.

    Autism in the Golden Era

There is a whole range of children in school who require something extra from the school system, from children who are virtually non-functional under any circumstances to children who are just learning English. The so-called ESOL kids are the least of the school's problems because the kids pick...

    Problems of Housing (1944)

One quality of asbestos siding and anything else made of it, is that it's fireproof. Vinyl siding melts and aluminum doesn't hold up very well, either, in a fire. None will prevent a fire, of course, and anyway, you wouldn't have interior walls of asbestos. Drywall (sheetrock) is fireproof...

    Autism in the Golden Era

There probably wasn't. Remember, before 1960, probably earlier in some places, later in others, there was little integration of any kind. Black people did not attend school with white people, especially in the South. Children now referred to as "special needs" were kept out of school altogether...

    Show us your Guns!

I already have six magazines for the .38 Super and I figure that's enough. I also discovered that I have more .45 ACP ammunition than I do .38 Super (with one antique .45 magazine), so you know what that means.
