    Side By Side/ Hat Comparisons

Not having worn any out of the house or for any length of time, my opinion is from limited experience. But I don't think that it is the case. As with any hat, a good fit is the prescription for comfortable wear. Like a stiff hat, there is little or no path to adjusting one that doesn't fit well...

    Side By Side/ Hat Comparisons

Last week I had an opportunity to talk about hats with Donna's Costume Construction class. The Zoom meeting was great fun and the 90 minute talk from our "hat room" was recorded. I had hoped to share the link here. Alas, as Zoom newbies, it didn't occur to us that Zoom could not record the phone...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Only a guess, but I think it might be earlier than the 1941 ads. The quality of debossed imprint and the character of the sweatband suggest a 1930s hat to me. That fashion forward upswing bow (original?) does not seem in keeping with an entry level hat as described in the 1941 ad. It's an...

OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

1941-42. I've not seen a LOTXXXX number imprinted on a sweatband after this time. This practice went the way of the gold size label about the same time.

OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I am not aware (or don’t remember) examples of this liner before WWII. From the photos provided, this hat appears to be a lovely c.1950 example. If it is earlier, labels, size tag and sweatband markings will show something different than expected.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Thank you for the nice notes... I've been a little preoccupied and without much time to check in but all is well in my circle of family and friends. Good to see your faces again too.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

LOT 75XX, gold printed size tag and sewn rear seam are all markers pointing to the 1930s. From the western supply catalogs that are posted here on different threads, it appears that model names road into town fast and furious. It would likely be impossible to confirm without an imprint or stock...

    Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

Lovely hat and great photos. Here is the Porter's imprint from a 5X clear beaver western, 5-10 years later than yours.

    Western, anyone?

Great hat in lovely condition. I think your plan to love it and wear it is right on the mark. There are many theories that stars and leaves can suggest a difference between 1949 and 1951. Or 1951 and 1954. None of these, to my knowledge, are proven or foolproof. Without provenance or other...

    Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

No worries treading on my knowledge bank... I've lost a lot of those assets in the aging process. Yes, additional information/sampling would be needed to have it be more than a hunch. I am a big fan of trying to articulate a timeline for Stetson hats, but I just don't have the photos to support...

    Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

I'm not sure which hat that is... I have a couple of Stetsons that I believe date from 1900-1920 that have the red manufacturing tag. I haven't seen enough white labels or Stetsons from the first 50 years of the company to suggest that the white tag occupies a particular notch in the...

    Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

He was a member here in several aliases that were banned at some point. Like any of us who has owned and handled many hats, he has amassed knowledge and put forward information from experience - also theories, some of which were half-cocked at best. I haven't visited his website in many years...
