If You Could Keep But Only One Of Your Lids...

Guess I'd keep my Akubra Camp Draft. And I'd cheat and keep a panama.

Repurposing vintage items, where to draw the line

I always wanted a Leica IIIg, but I've seen exactly what you've seen in the pricing.

    Tarnish prevention

Hagerty makes cloth silver storage bags that I've had pretty good luck with. Just google Hagerty silver storage bags.

Repurposing vintage items, where to draw the line

Let me see if I understand this line of reasoning. I bought my house in 1977. It was 4 years old at the time. The builders had installed green shag and gold shag in the various rooms. I never got around to replacing it except in the family room and one bedroom that became a hobby room where...

Repurposing vintage items, where to draw the line

Consider this. More vintage items today are being scrapped and recycled than cut up and used for another purpose. They are worth more as recycled raw materials than as whatever they were manufactured as. How do you feel about that?

Stetson Fashion Collection 1940s Stratoliner Fur Felt Fedora Hat

I'm not usually that lucky. But lightening has to hit somewhere.

Stetson Fashion Collection 1940s Stratoliner Fur Felt Fedora Hat

I'm in for a Silverbelly Statoliner. Interestingly, I got distracted while on the FedoraStore web site and when I came back to my pc about 20 minutes later a window had popped offering me a 10% discount, which I was only too happy to take advantage of.

Putting on and Taking off your Fedora

I put on and take off my felt hats by the crown most of the time and always have. Gently. I've had some of my hats more than 20 years and I haven't had any problems with doing so. Straws, like others have stated, I handle by the brims. Their crowns are really too delicate for handling much...

    Unfortunate food, fortunately forgotten

I suppose that if you looked hard enough you could find (or make) just about anything people used to eat. But some things just need to be left to the past. For example, my dad used to cook breakfast on the weekends when I was a kid and he liked to serve up (shudder) such things as scrambled...

    Bicycle Helmet?!

Then consider this. When you are riding against traffic you leave the oncoming drivers very little choice about what to do to avoid hitting you if there isn't enough room for you and the approaching vehicles. When you are traveling in the same direction (the legally mandated direction) the...

    Shantung "straw" hats

Maybe it's because of what they're coated with sealing them up, but my Shantung hats don't breath particularly well. Makes them hotter to wear than natural panamas, at least the coarser weave panamas.

    The International Wool Felt Consortium

Case in point, a Stetson wool felt I picked up a few months ago from Dillards.

Are suits for work on the way out?

Not at all arguing with that, but... I've experienced a number of instances where I've been walking through stores while wearing a suit and had to fend off multiple customers who apparently thought I worked there. I guess that I was not wearing a name tag didn't register.

    The International Wool Felt Consortium

It seems most of us own a few wool hat shaped objects that are worn when we don't want to risk undue damage to real hats. It's doubtful that you'll find anyone who owns a decent fur felt that would say they prefer wool and wish they hadn't bought the fur felt.

    Opinion requested - windowpane blazer

Sorry, but it looks like it's made from a blanket to me.

Are suits for work on the way out?

I haven't worn a suit to work in over 25 years. Having to wear a suit at work is more the exception than the rule these days and the decline is not a recent phenomenon. There are certain professions, especially those where meeting the customer or public is part of the normal day to day, where...

    Panama in a Homburg block?

I do have a white Dobbs Eldorado myself with a white band and I like it just fine. But, if I had suits as sharp as Jack's I think I'd want a better hat than the Dobbs to really complete the look. The Dobbs would be a little like hanging furry dice from the rear view mirror in a Rolls.

Do you see your Indy hats as "formal" or "casual" hats?

Agreed, even though there are at least some scenes in the IJ movies where he is wearing that (cleaned up) brown hat with suits.
