1948 Operation Vittles (the Berlin Aitlift); Navy Transport Squadron 6 and 8 actively participate. Here Naval aviators sport an M-69F Navy Transport Coat (probably the most impressive flight jacket/coat ever issued in the U.S.), an M-422a (or early G-1) and an M-445 sheepskin flight jacket...
Hello Gentlemen,
I just bought my first Barbour jacket off the 'Bay and it's a beauty; a vintage A10 in sandstone (tan) color, size 48. Nearly unworn/mint condition but missing it's belt.
If anyone has a belt for sale or can point me in the right direction, please let me know.
I've e-mailed...
I just got mine this year so I'm going to put this jacket to the test. I'd imagine it depends on your personal preference and tolerance but I'd say this jacket is good up until the temp hits the upper 60's or so.
Here's an alternative: Eastman Air Comfort.
Large Mouton collar: check.
Dark Seal brown horse hide: check (not Vincenza but the ELC HH is very nice nonetheless).
Warm: check (quilted body and sleeves!).
Plus moleskin lined handwarmer pockets!
Plus dark brown knits and a crimson quilted interior...
1962.
The C-62 on the label denotes the year of manufacture. Also the 7823-B model G-1's were made from 1961-1963.
I have the same model Ralph Edwards (mine is a size 46) with a vintage USS SKIPJACK submarine patch on the chest that was worn aboard that sub by a ship's officer. If only that...
Nice G-1 and very good idea to pick up an actual military issue jacket. I can answer some of your questions:
The label in fact does state that your jacket was manufactured in 1984 (one of the coolest things about these Navy jackets is the year of manufacture on the nomenclature/size tag).
The...
There's no ghostly "show through" on the inside gun pockets on G-1 jackets that are 50 or even 60 years old. G-1 jackets are goatskin (lighter weight than FQHH) and some of that vintage goat is very robust and quite thick but I've never seen any pocket outline. Just one man's observation
I believe that Navy specifications called for chrome-tanned goatskin (tho for a couple of years some makers were using heavy steer hide). Most were pigment dyed with a very tough, robust finish but earlier contacts (1940's-1950's ?) may have been aniline dyed.
I bought a BK M-422a jacket about 4-5 years ago. It was made of what they called "mountain goat" hide. I think they switched to Maltese goat right after their run of mountain goat ran out.
The mountain goat is very heavy and grainy and it's got a unique dark cordovan tone. Nice hide but not...
Nice! Very nice. Pancho Barnes was a famous aviatrix in her day (a rival of Amelia Earhart) and she ran a bar (The Happy Bottom Riding Club) in the Mojave desert that catered to test pilots including Chuck Yeager (she's even fictionalized in the movie "The Right Stuff"). Anyway, great score...
Ralph Lauren has a "Denim & Supply" line of clothing that has lots of neo-vintage style clothes and military styles. Their MA-1 with vintage flag is actually pretty nice (I tried it on at Macy's).
