Here is a recent find. I searched “the continental AP hansen eau claire wis” and found two newspaper ads, one was dated 1910 and the other 1917. Could this be an officer’s hat from WWI?
Thanks, Bill
I think I may have found a good one here. I paid $50 for this “leather” hat.

Thanks for the info Daniel!
Does the trolley cord offer any help in dating a Stetson hat? I associate the trolley with pre-60s and keyhole date tags but my experience is limited.
I found a price tag inside the sweatband for $40. I don’t know if that helps in dating but it is interesting to...
That seems plausible. I haven’t been able to find another hat with these exact markings so it seems a bit of an oddball. The quality is very fine and the condition is like new so it was a fortunate find.
Seriously!!! Not matching the hatch per-se but wearing a hat that blends into the background. The whole reason I got into felt hats again recently was in attempt to find a pinkish/red hat that would blend into a notoriously difficult canyon section of the Blackfoot here in Montana. I convinced...
Well, my niece wants to go with a new hat which is understandable and I’m cool with that. Seems like a good opportunity to start a new hobby and with all the help and encouragement and great folks here I sense it will be a rewarding journey. The skills, equipment, and materials seem to be on...
That makes a lot of sense and I appreciate you helping me get on the right path. I will be on the lookout for a block in my size 7 3/8 for future projects but will likely throw in the towel on this size 7 hat. If my niece doesn’t like the distressed look I’ll get her a new hat and find a new...
The liner is stitched in so I haven’t seen the inside. I pulled a section back and it seems to be same pouncing as the outside but it’s minty fresh. If things go south on me I will definitely consider turning the hat inside out but will have that done by a professional. I’m definitely at my...
Bowen, here is a quick update. I’ve made some progress but definitely have more to do. That ring doesn’t want to go away!
Here is the progression so far — left to right is the original hat, initial steam/shape/brush, and then result after 7 steps shown below:
Here are the tools and...
Thanks for your tip — I appreciate hearing from someone who has been down this path before.
Is this the Oppy hat?

A previous owner made an attempt to go in that direction but...
Thanks for the cleaning tips everyone! So far I’ve used packing tape to remove loose particles and then have steamed and brushed with a hat brush and sponge. The photo in my initial post are the results.
Next I’ll try Dawn with a soft brush or get some hat cleaning foam spray for light hats...
Thanks for the tip Brent — I really appreciate it!
The ring is not just a bump but it is shade or two lighter then the rest of the felt. The felt is pretty thin and fine so not sure sanding is the way to go. I might try a light felt foam cleaner as the next step. Any tips here?
TBD on whether I can make this into a win or not.
My niece sent me this photo and asked if I could find her a hat like it:
I found this hat (seller’s photo):
I opened up the crown and did a first pass at cleaning and shaping. It has a nasty ring where a previous owner tried to porkpie...
I was able to verify that Rex Hatters Inc of Houston did a filing in 1946 to forfeit their existence. I also found a Rex Hatters advertisement in a 1945 Houston area high school annual. The evidence leans towards this being a 40s hat.
Debating whether to do a flip as is or to hold on to it and restore. Felt is in good shape but sweatband is split at the tag and has a few tears elsewhere. Liner is stained. Seller said the hat shop (Rex Hatters Inc Houston) closed their doors in 1946 so hat appears to have some age to it...
