So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

We've been getting mandatory IT training of late. Our University had a pretty serious cyber attack earlier this year so they're trying to educate the masses on recognizing and reporting threats that get past the firewall. It wasn't so onerous, though it was obnoxious in how politically correct...

Quite the buzzkill aren't you! ;) It had to happen sooner or later.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

"Out of the depths I cry to thee" Psalm 130. There are several very lovely and quite moving musical settings of that text from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, as well as by Bach during the 18th century (I'm partial to the former). A poignant plea for divine help in light of the...

Why is it not fair? In my opinion the literalists are the problem. They have not allowed their church/religion grow beyond the time that the scriptures were written. Why was Jesus so revolutionary in his teaching? Because he turned the established religious practice and status quo on its head...

Hear, hear. I feared that I had stepped in it, but YMMV is the rule of the day am I'm content with being disagreed with. Being judgmental is part of human nature. I think that cynical though he may be, Zombie is probably more disappointed. After all, who doesn't want to think better (by any...

Fair enough, but making such a judgement says more about the one making the judgment than it does those being judged. "you're less of a Christian than I am because you only go to church twice a year and I go all the time." The problem is holding others to your (or even the church's)...

So being a Christian is a matter of all in or nothing? I've gotta say, Christians are some of the most judgmental and intolerant people around.

    Who else grinds coffee?

Well it wasn't that bad. That was the smell of my brother's vehicles. As a kid I grew up working in tobacco (Connecticut broad leaf) so I kinda like the smell of cured raw tobacco. To this day it and the smell of a good cigar are very nostalgic for me. (I never understood why cigarettes smelled...

    Who else grinds coffee?

Perhaps a bit of clarification for those who may not know. Some of the more aromatic pipe tobaccos smell very similar to coffee, particularly hazelnut coffee. So, given that taste is so strongly smell based, my coffee smelled distinctly of the tobacco the smell of which I had recently been...

    Who else grinds coffee?

On a not un-similar note, many, many years ago I visited a tobacco shop in the mall and savored the aromas of the many loose pipe tobaccos, and cigars in the walk in humidor, after which I patronized a coffee shop. The combination wasn't all that objectionable I have to admit, though unexpected.

The operative term there is "cranks out". I did a lot of research in the process of self publishing my own book and there's a lot of talk about building your brand and establishing a following, so trying to catch repeat customers is the only way to get any kind of real return on your efforts...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I never seemed to have much trouble with getting articles published. I can only remember one or two rejections, and I withdrew one when an editor became overbearing and heavy handed. I guess my success was in knowing where to submit my papers and which journals were out of my league, or had an...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Naw, I'm employed as a librarian. No professional productivity required there - I'd gauge my eyes out with a spoon if there were. I aspired to and did teach for a while but a bad bunch of students came through one semester and I subsequently fell afoul of the department head who, unfortunately...

No, not at all. The only writing that garners a paycheck is in the popular and commercial sector. Academic articles are not paid and in the sciences one actually pays to publish. Can't speak to the returns on books but I'd bet it's precious little given the sweat and tears that go into them. I...

Being in academia and an academic writer myself, I can honestly say that truer words were never written. I love it.

Recent sources of aggravation: shipping carriers (because they make it so easy) I recently published a book and in the end stages of approving proofs I was at the mercy of Fedex and the USPS. As you can imagine their usual lethargy stretched my timetable by weeks, even with VERY expensive...

What advice would you give to your younger selves?

I think the bottom line that nobody probably wants to admit is that all of us eventually become our parents.

Before you pop the question, consider how her parents act towards each other. Because ultimately that's what you'll be getting.

The idea of religious guilt is interesting and as irreverent and as factious as these posts may appear, there are genuine, real world characterizations that can be made. In my experience, with regard to assuaging guilt, a Protestant is most likely to work it off whereas a Catholic would more...
