the little one inside by the back? Decorative. once upon a time, some hats had this as an additional means for size adjustment. For some reason they just kept putting them in hats.

felt hats are $600 plus I believe. But they may have different options than the last time I checked, they recently produced a batch of lightweight beaver felts for another local retailer and they weren't quite so much.

JJ Hat Center in NYC, Bencraft in Brooklyn. Worth and Worth is also there, but I do not recommend their straws. Paul's Hat Works in SF does custom felt and Panama hats. Small, but very old shop. We don't really have any proper hat stores anymore, though Goorin is around for wool hats. Berkeley...

The Non Shorpy Web All Stars.

Jim Leavelle, the Dallas detective who was handcuffed to Oswald when he was shot by Jack Ruby, has passed at age 99. They have the outfit he wore on that day at the Sixth Floor museum, and it's a dead ringer for my beater Resistol.

BTW JJ, A home brim press might also prove a useful investment. There's one or two models available online, including this one from Stratton/Winchester: https://strattonhats.com/products/accessories/brim-press/ Although if you or someone you know is a moderately competent woodworker, this is...

Thanks gents, and I agree, the venting should alleviate any Shangtung hot-ness, and there is something to be said for a water resistant 'straw' hat.

Modern Stetson Shangtung OR. Normally Shangtung hats are not my favorite straws, but I'm taking a trip next month and would love to not have to worry about my natural straw Panama OR getting squished. JJ had a sale and my impulsivity kicked in. I like it! Leather sweat with the OR imprint, the...

Heck, if it were my size I probably would have bought it last night, and I don't even like Whippets! If nothing else it's probably safe to assume this is a rare modern Stetson. Though it would also be a darn good marketing idea IMHO.

I saw that too and have no idea what the heck it is. I assume the JP is for Japan, but I don't remember seeing this On the Stetson Japan Instagram and it didn't feature in this spread from a Japanese men's magazine last fall: Neat to see the repro tag.

Does anybody have a pattern for making a hat liner? I guess really I'm asking if I need a more circular or more oval top part and whether or not the side piece needs a radius.

I would recommend the Royal Deluxe premier strat. Stetsons are generally more finely pounced than Akubras, leading to a softer hand. My experience has been that Stetsons have less stiffener, but this varies in both Akubra and Stetson production runs. The Stetson Japan instagram account did post...
