Thanks everyone for the 'likes' and kind comments from the other day. Still enjoying the Real Nutria. I was around upper Market this afternoon, so I took a small detour to snap this pic in front of the building this hat was sold from sometime around 1935.
ca. mid 1930's Real Nutria Stetson...I'm actually the third lounger to take possession of this one. But since it was sold out of SF, I'll hang onto it for a while ;)
...I just don't see the issue here.
I know the feeling of a custom hat not quite fitting right. I've never had an issue with a hatter not wanting to take it back and correct it. It sounds like you don't have that issue either. I would not read too much into a succinct reply. On the contrary, I...
My gut feeling on that one is custom or reworked vintage. The flat-ish brim with almost a pencil curl looks distinctly unlike most stock dress hat flanges.
Good luck with that!
Even if you cataloged every hat on the forum, it would only be a fraction of the models out there. Most hats never had a model name anywhere on the hat so it is impossible to positively identify them.
Thanks for the kind comments, all. There is some slight mothing and a bit of staining at the front, but nothing too obvious. I brushed it up a bit and took a few passes with the white hat sponge.
Peeked behind the sweat, 52 block! No wonder I liked it. Also found some newspaper tucked behind...
Speaking of 'different' Open Roads, I also posted this ad from Visalia Stock Saddle co. in the Western thread, but I didn't look very carefully at the OR listing until just now.
Open Road with 3-cord band? News to me.
Well, what other size 7 did you think was gonna pick this one up from Garrett?
Store imprint is of Visalia Stock and Saddle. This business still exists, although its been bought and sold many times over, and hopped the border into Oregon. The original business was started by three Mexican...
10x Stetson arrived....didn't even have to open the box to know it fell under "gripe."
The silver lining is that this was indeed a very modern hat. Poly thread even! Return process initiated.

The legislative text in question is:
The SF Ban, which was passed in 2018, carries an almost identical definition for "fur."
I sent off an email to the SF City Supervisor who sponsored...
This question is asked quite frequently, including as recently yesterday afternoon in the "ask a question, get an answer" thread, where it has accordingly been answered several times over.
having 'no skin in the game' as a hatter to be, I might suggest not starting off with the most expensive...
If I were a hatter, I'm not so sure if want to broadcast my "trade secrets" on youtube. Since most custom hatters are working with Winchester felts, a great deal of the value of a custom is how the individual hat maker finishes the felt and trimmings. There's a great video of Art Fawcett making...
We talked about this a few weeks back. Fur felt seems to be exempt from said ban as the fibers have been removed from the pelt. The real target of the ban is things like mink and fox tails and the like. I contacted one of our city supervisors when SF passed a city wide ban and she confirmed fur...
