Well, that's what I think! It's funny, I never feel small until some twoodle-head feels a need to inform me of that fact. Some lady told me once, "my goodness, aren't you short! Short! So short! My! Short, short, short!" (I quote her verbatim.)
I had no idea what to respond, so I just said...
How is that? Are you trying to refinance?
I spent the day taking a friend to the hospital ... this is someone who loathes medical situations and tried to convince me and everyone else that severe chest pains don't mean anything and would probably go away on their own.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share these images. I'm learning a great deal from them. In fact now I want to study up on Romania in the 1930s to get some context for these photos.
The fourth picture from the bottom, the lady on the far right, actually looks very much like some...
Yes, I bet they would support the ankles very well. These would be great for gardening & hiking if they were comfortable enough. I just wish I had some idea of how much they'll cost?
I would really appreciate that, sheeplady. I've studied a lot of photos of 30s and 40s kitchens, and I've come to the conclusion that most of the work surfaces were achieved through furniture, not counter tops. I.e., cabinets and tables with enameled tops, or else wooden surfaces. But that...
About that sweater (ignoring any intentional or unintentional overtones or undertones) would any of the knitters here have an idea of the stitch pattern? I think it's wonderful, and would love to try to copy it.
Thanks for these gorgeous images. Absolutely enthralling.
What did you do with your counters? I'll have to have a couple of cabinets removed to bring in a free-standing gas stove, which (as it turns out) can be done fairly inexpensively. I can paint the cabinets myself -- I think I'll probably just paint them white & add some appropriate hardware --...
If you want to try a Golden Era solution, give Cloverine Salve a whirl. It's softer and less waxy than any of the other pots of salve around today. Burt's Bees is very nice, but Cloverine is lovely.
The only real drawback to using a safety razor these days is that most bathroom medicine cabinets today no longer have that little slot in the back for used blades!
Actually the Bolshoi film sounds wonderful. Wish I could have seen that. Interesting combo: basement sludge and Russian ballet.
My day today was less stressful (well, I can't imagine a more stressful one) but brought its fair share of golden-era style adventures. It's been raining so hard this...
I really think it's a question of proportion. I'm barely 5'1" and I do wear the longer early to mid-30s styles. If they're tailored and have a defined waistline, I don't think they're too terrible. After all, a lot of women in the early 30s were small by today's standards, no?
I've...
You should buy ten tubes immediately! I just went back to CVS where I found my "holy grail" lipstick and discovered that there was only one tube left in the rack. I have some kind of really terrible lipstick luck: every time I love a color it is instantly discontinued. In this case, I wonder...
Or worse, "belfie" (evidently a picture a celebrity takes of her own derriere.) Very tasteful.
I looked up the etymology of the word "nostalgia" and see that it's based on Green words, which actually mean the pain of wanting to return home. I see all this in a much more positive light. If...
What an interesting person. I wish the negatives could be found and reassembled. The Civil War photographer Mathew Brady was world-famous in his own time, and then fell into such obscurity that his glass plates were used for greenhouses (which effectively destroyed them.) Let's hope Marion's...
Great thread. Really enjoy the responses.
1. Watched Over-The-Air television?
1999, when I moved to the Midwest, and discovered that there's no reception in the Great Central Mississippi Valley.
2. Used a Rotary Phone?
Today -- I have two Monophones from the 1930s (with additional ringer...
What about if they're totally burned out? I very much want to bring the "Airflow" silk-bladed fan back to life, but when I opened it up I saw that it innards were char-broiled.
That's amazing. If only I had the skills to do that. Would it be too difficult for an unhandy person? How did you learn about radio stations? I've read that Jo Teeuwisse actually hooks up an mp3 player to her vintage radio and has arranged the knobs such that they actually change the volume and...
That's a good idea. The earlier post on that subject actually indicated that children were getting hurt in the fans, so it's not a question of being too stupid to know not to stick your fingers into the blades -- kids might not be able to judge the danger. Though I have to confess that sometimes...
In response to the problem of the danger of metal fan blades to little hands, a company called Airflow patented silk ribbon "blades."
I found one in an abandoned warehouse, but it's completely burned out inside and I haven't had the chance to have it repaired yet. I have no idea how well...
Fans
I'm sure there must be an earlier thread on fans, but after an exhaustive search I wasn't able to find it. The word "fan" (even with "electric" added) yields thousands of responses, and most of them deal with celebrities.
Anyway, I accidentally became a vintage fan collector (though I...
