Thank you Sir! That is an excellent answer. So, as I understand it, sand paper is the way to go. I know it is less expensive too. The only reason I asked is because on page 53 of Scientific Hat Finishing and Renovating it states: "On a fine hat emery paper 7-0 to 8-0 should be used.....". But...
AL: forgive my ignorance but that is a vintage hat right? I assume they no longer are in business? I like it on you. Also, great photography.:eusa_clap
For achieving optimum smoothness in the finished hat I have read two different things.
"The Cowboy Hat Book" by Rand says to use sandpaper.
"Scientific Hat Finishing and Renovating" dated 1868, says use emery paper.

I am no expert, but I believe there are three approaches to installing a sweatband.
1. glue it.
2. use an awl, then cover the stitching with a decorative exterior ribbon.
3. machine or hand sew the cloth that is attached to the sweatband to the felt and then decoate with exterior ribbon hiding...

Lefty: going so fast, maybe you should have a hemlet? haha
Brad had a great tutorial on using a sewing awl to sew the sweatband in. That works. I have one. Most fine hats use a seamstress to actually sew the cloth portion to the hat. I have a sewing awl. It works pretty good, but the ultimate fino is the seamstress way.
fmw: the maker of the hat took the easy way out with glue, which is not necessarily wrong, but here is what a sweatband looks like when purchased separately. The sewing you see is already on the sweatband. They just glued the cloth part (and part of the leather) that normally is sewn into the hat.
SpeedRcrX : I think you look great in that hat. I especially like the ribbon styling. That looks like a new ribbon style from Art that I have never seen before. Congratulations. Happy traveling. Take some pictures while you travel!
AL: You look great in those photos Nice pictures!
Alan: Poor David, he couldn't even afford a hat. I think he would look a little more proper with a hat on, don't you?
