I think you'll find a lot more photos of the N-1 being worn as a working deck jacket aboard destroyers, landing craft and other smaller vessels rather than aboard aircraft carrier flight decks. On flat tops they were pretty strict about the color coded jerseys for Sailors with specific duties...
Here is a photo (1945) of Navy Chaplain Joseph O'Callahan ministering to the wounded aboard the US aircraft carrier USS FRANKLIN after she was struck by Japanese kamikazes. He appears to be wearing an N-1 jacket.
I've seen lots of WWII photos of Sailors wearing the blue clasp-front deck jacket but can't recall any pics of the khaki/green N-1 jacket.
One thing to point out; although they were in the Pacific theater, it did get colder as the Navy neared the more northern areas of operations (Iwo Jima...
Thank you for that informative and thorough write-up @HawkFlyer
Although the A-2 gets more love from many folks around here, I count myself among the loyal G-1 fans that appreciate the design, the history and the continuing legacy of the Navy's official leather flight jacket.
HK has a great maritime history museum; it's in the same building as the Star Ferry terminal. And if you have the time, check out the shops and super bargain prices at Stanley Market. I bought a brand new Eddie Bauer Gore-Tex jacket there for about $20 US. Have a great time!
I just got this off the 'Bay: an old LL Bean sheepskin bomber jacket in a large size 46 long, mint condition for about $100. A tag inside the pocket has a manufacturing date of Oct. 15, 1990. The new Bean bomber jackets have acrylic pile lining and fake fur collars; this one has genuine mouton...
I think dark brown mouton takes years of exposure to sunlight, U/V rays and a dash of salty air (the environment you'd find aboard an aircraft carrier) to change color from brown to red to honey blonde. Short of that, you can find a vintage piece of aged mouton on an old coat or second-hand...
Putting my LW G-1 through a rigorous field test; everything from cave spelunking to touring Albany in a pouring rain and then out to dinner with friends at a local steakhouse. This jacket is definitely up to the task!
Here on the East Coast a heavy rainstorm cooled the temps down to the mid-60's so I got to wear my Lost Worlds G-1. I replaced the slightly worn/stretched mid-brown knits with some NOS burgundy-brown heavy duty cuffs and waistband. I love the contrast between the seal brown goatskin, the...
Exploring around NY state's scenic and historic Hudson Valley in my Lost Worlds G-1. The temp's finally took a nose-dive after this morning's heavy rainstorm (in was in the 90's 2 days ago but today it was only in the mid 60's! Yay!!!).
I think that jacket fits you fine. Maybe the sleeves are a little long but personally I prefer my jackets to have sleeves a tad long (I hate the exposed wrist and ride-up of a sleeve when you reach forward or are driving a car). I have long arms so sleeves being too short are my number one issue.
For all of us Irvin jacket/Spitfire fans, I saw the movie "Dunkirk" yesterday and you're going to fall in love with the Supermarine Spitfire all over again after watching this film. The Tom Hardy character wears an Irvin (buried under straps and buckles and viewed mostly in extreme close-up...
Just scored a LW G-1 in size 46 off The 'bay at about 1/4 the cost of a new one. The fit is perfect and the thick goatskin is buttery soft. Great workmanship (as usual with Lost Worlds). I've always wanted a LW G-1 to add to my collection and now "mission accomplished"! :)
I've read that the AVG also obtained gear (particularly khaki shorts and shirts) from the RAF bases in the area. It just added to the eclectic variety of "uniforms" seen on AVG members in old photos.
Thanks for the GREAT review! That does look like a pretty nice copy of a 1950's G-1. Obviously it's not one of those hyper-authentic $1,000+ jackets, but it does have the basic look and detailing of a Korean War-era G-1 at a very attractive price point.
Congrats on a cool jacket; wear it in good...
