Sorry for yesterday's upside-down "action" shot of the Excelled G-1. Thanks to @Michael A for pointing it out and to @Fanch for correcting it! Let's try this again...
Gearing up in the pilot ready room, getting ready for a pre-dawn air strike on the Bridges at Toko-Ri!
Uh, actually it's 5am...
"Action" shot of my Excelled G-1 in the ship's pilot house. Rainy, chilly, windy, mini-Nor'easter today. I've added an orange safety "ditch" whistle and loaded the pockets with a Swiss Army knife, Ray Bans, Chapstick, wallet, iPhone and other essentials and now this is my "official" work jacket.
Nice jacket @Dumpster Diver! I also have a Split-S Aviation G-1, size 46. Found it on the 'Bay a couple years ago. I agree with you that they are a really nice jacket with features reminiscent of WWII/Korean War era jackets.
My G-1 Split-S label states that it was made in El Cajon, CA. I believe...
One really cool thing about my year 2000 Excelled G-1 is that the windflap has the USN perforated correctly on both the outside AND the inside of the flap! Usually it's reversed when viewed from the inside but Excelled sewed the two layers of the windflap together and made the USN correct from...
I agree with you @daw that real mouton is nicer than the synthetic dynal collar fur. Some older modern jackets have small collars with ratty, stiff and thin "fur" that is not very appealing. However this Excelled G-1 has a large collar with very soft and warm material that feels almost like real...
I am the proud new owner of an Excelled cowhide G-1 that was gifted to me by a friend (and true gentleman) who obtained it from a family member who was in the Navy aviation community.
The jacket is made of thick yet soft, grainy cowhide that is reminiscent of the hide you might find on a WWII...
@Fanch thank you pal! I search online (eBay, Etsy, etc) pretty regularly and once in a while I find a larger sized G-1 in nice condition that can be had at a good price. I think the fact that this jacket was missing it's label made it less desirable to the usual perusers on the 'Bay. The...
My 1973 Star G-1 fits well over a t-shirt and can be worn as a "grab it and go" jacket anytime one would usually reach for a denim jacket or windbreaker. Not bad for 50 bucks! :)
Deck jackets are the property of the ship and get issued to ship's crew as needed. They wouldn't be issued to everyone; an aviator aboard a carrier for example would not be issued a deck jacket since they have their own personally issued flight jackets. You are supposed to turn them back in to...
Just picked up this label-less G-1 on eBay for $50. I've ascertained that it's a 1973 Star Sportswear model (that rectangular zipper pull was the major clue). It's a very large size jacket with awesome goatskin. I had new knits put on and might swap the synthetic fur collar for some vintage mouton.
@Big J the deck jackets were made to fit comfortably over Navy dungarees (the traditional working uniform aboard ship). The chambray shirt was relatively thin but in cold weather was worn with a black "Gob" sweater that was thick wool with a mock turtleneck design. Perhaps the roomy fit of the...
I'm logging lots of hours in the Lost Worlds G-1; today at work was 15 hours of violent thunderstorms. Saw the Empire State Building get hit by lightning 3 times! But an absolutely gorgeous sunset made it all worthwhile:-)
