Although not a "movie" hat, I always thought the cowboy hat worn by Richard Dean Anderson in several episodes of the MacGyver TV series was pretty cool.
Yes, I measured from bottom of collar to end of knit waistband. I have a long torso and usually look for 27" back length in most jackets. This Cockpit size 48 G-1 has nice long arms and the 25.75/26" back measurement is a pretty long body length.
The nametag in the first photo is more of a USAAF style. Navy aviators generally wear a larger style (2" by 4" I believe) with embossed gold wings plus their name, rank and USN or USNR.
Thanks pal; I actually have one of Steve's great repro M-422a jackets. It's a beauty and I'll keep it unadorned. I am angling for a used G&B 422 that I can sew a leather name tag onto. Tho I was never a jet-jockey or an "Airedale", I've just retired and wanted to commemorate my 26-Year Navy...
Sadly I was informed by a G&B sales rep that they no longer offer their M-422a :(
If anyone wants to part with their's (size 42/44/46 long, depending on actual measurements), please let me know.
My Cockpit 100-Mission G-1 looks like an early '50's G-1 but I also love the russet brown/red...
There is a G-1 on the 'Bay right now stamped USCG on the wind flap made by Orchard M/C Dist. Inc. (I believe that is the Excelled company). Dated 1986.
Maybe there is more than one maker for official USCG G-1's? Or maybe USW started supplying them after 1986?
Thank you for clearing up that rumor. I think we're all equally interested in hearing from manufacturers and their reps and getting detailed info straight from the source!
U.S. Wings also sell their own labeled "Signature Series" G-1 jackets with no seam at the bottom front of the jacket.
I suppose at this fabled NJ G-1 factory, it's easier for the cutter doing the patterns to make the front panels of the G-1 with one piece of leather without that extra sewn seam...
I've heard it rumored that The Cockpit and Cooper as well as Schott all had these "seamless" G-1 jackets manufactured at the same factory in New Jersey and just put different labels in them. Not sure if this "scuttlebutt" is true, but that would seem to explain the lack of seam :-)
What a great review and/or dissertation on the G-1! Funny as hell too (had me chuckling in my morning coffee). I totally agree on your assessment re The Cockpit 100-mission G-1. It's a jacket that is neither a $1000+ bespoke masterpiece nor is it an assembly line dime-a-dozen mall jacket. It...
Very nice jacket! Looks rather similar to the 1950's 55-J14 model of the G-1.
I've always liked US-A jackets but my only (minor) detailing critique on their G-1 is that they use the same rib/rack elastic material for both the waistband and the cuffs (on originals, only the waistband was...
