    Old Cars

The smell of a vintage car is wonderful. I always think of it as exhaust, oil, horsehair and cigarettes. I have an old Alfa Romeo and just redid the interior. Of course the aroma went away, but I put the seats in a closet in the garage and now that space smells like an old car.

Question on International Calling Late '50s/early '60s?

Does anyone know if there were places like these American Express or post office phone services that would arrange a long distance call in airports? I've seen lots of payphones but nothing like what is being described. Of course it is possible that airports, with lots of international phone...

Question on International Calling Late '50s/early '60s?

Thanks! I'm guessing, as you say, it would be easier done from the US than the other way around. I do have some memory, however, of my parents waiting quite awhile to "get a line". I can't remember if they were holding for it or they were called back, but it was after '61 because that's when I...

Question on International Calling Late '50s/early '60s?

Even better might be to make the New York to Manchester call from an airport, like New York International (now Kennedy), but I still think it might take an operation like Am Ex or something else to get the International line.

Question on International Calling Late '50s/early '60s?

Hello all, I'm working on yet another novel, this time set in 1961. In it I have characters who need to place calls from one country to another but they are not calling from home or from a hotel. Call #1 is from Rome to Geneva and I suspect that this could be done from a payphone given you...

Seperating myth from reality: Nazi secret tech development projects

Revell models are a wonderful, mostly unexamined, STORY of the past and the future (and our hopes and fears). I would to know more about their product development process and history!!!

    Tramp Steamers

They probably need to start with a new contract with the Longshoremen. The shipping companies, being in it for the long haul (and probably not losing any money with the current high rates), don't seem to want to renegotiate. The govt can keep the port open but, if there's no one there to work...

German commando actions with political implications

Thanks! Good info here that I'll be going through. A the moment I have just given in and used Skorzeny, though I may need to back up and rewrite using a fictional character (and events perhaps inspired by some of these suggestions) if I find I need to place him in some circumstance that does...

German commando actions with political implications

I'm researching any German commando actions I can find that had political or propaganda motivations. My first stop has been the career of Otto Skorzeny, his rescue of Mussolini and his wife, and his kidnapping of Admiral Horthy's son and later attack on Horthy's headquarters. Those are good...

Hunting Hitler on the History Channel

The "Hitler got away" story is fascinating mostly because of it's longevity. I suspect that it's a sort of story that is told simply because it WAS told, history as an Ouroboros (that snake eating its tail symbol). I may have said this a while back but "who cares if Hitler got away?" What was...

Myths of the Golden Era -- Exploded!

Los Angeles, likely all of California, was a live and let live, buyer beware, libertarian wonderland until the early 1970s. People came here to get away from the stifling norms of all the other places in the world. It was the place where you could change your name, start a cult, make a million...

Notes on Radio/Audio Drama: Picking a Studio

The best mic set-up for our method of production, the one that I've been most happy with and would preferably use in the future is Sennheiser MKH 40 Cardioids. For the non audio geeks here this is a mic most often used in the film and classical music business. It is very efficient (loud)...

Notes on Radio/Audio Drama: Picking a Studio

Those are some classic microphones! I love the 44, and I've had friends who have used the AEA clones quite a bit including a music video I helped them with just a couple of months ago. I'd have everyone closer if I could, but we get a certain useful amount of isolation with just this distance...

    Notes of Radio/Audio Drama: Schedules

Intro: From 1985 through 2015 I produced, directed and wrote a series of about sixty Audio Dramas for Random House Audio Publishing. These productions had run times stretching from one to three hours, casts of four or five up to over twenty actors, and sound effects created both live in studio...

Notes on Radio/Audio Drama: Picking a Studio

I started creating these Notes/Lessons/Experiences on an Audio Production forum. I'm not sure how they'll go over or how long I'll continue but I figured I'd place them here too because, who knows, someone might be interested. They are a bit technical but it does give you a sense of how you...

    Indiana Jones V

For a popular or distinctive actor it may eventually be a hedge against disfigurement or crippling accident. It would be easy enough these days to allow someone to voice-over their CGI facsimile. Allowing a corporation, unless it was owned by myself or my heirs, to "own" my image would be a...

    Indiana Jones V

It's been awhile since I've checked in on the technology but, you are right, the "dots" seem like those used for "attaching" a CGI face or elements of one. This is either a very simplified or superficial version of what I'm familiar with or the technology has vastly improved. It is possible...

Science Fiction Genre - Religion vs Scientific Origins, and the Nature of Self Destruction

I agree with you ... about the "enlightened" part. But space exploration seems rife with the possibilities of slavery. Astronauts are trapped and EVERYTHING even air is a commodity that can be denied. Scary. Perhaps as a joke, someone has started some sort of referendum to deny Jeff Bezos...

    Breif Review: For All Mankind

LOL! Actually, it's pretty mild in it's wokeness. The female characters are integrated pretty well, calling up the Mercury 13 (women who trained in the early space program) when the Soviets send a woman to the moon. The main bit of wokiness is probably a Mexican girl who crosses the border...
